Read More	The following is a quotation by Sister Antoinette Cyre from the book "Wheels of Time A History of Riviere Que Barre," page 156, published 1978. "Francois-Xavier Cyre, born August 28, 1838, and his wife, Philomene Gervais and family, arrived Canada in the mid 1890's to take up homesteading on the Klondike Trail, two miles south of the present site of Riviere Qui Barre. They hailed from Cloud County, Colifax Township, Clyde, Kansas, an area which was afflicted with tornadoes, cyclones, and droughts. The local newspaper of the day records the following: "The 61 days of drought came to an end last Sunday morning, which was a blessing for the parched earth. It comes too late to benefit the crops, but it puts the earth in splendid condition for fall ploughing." (The Clyde Argus, Sept.1894). The last phrase is typical of the virtue of hope, which is always very much alive in the heart of a true farmer. But a few months later the same chronicle seems to be laying the blame on these adverse conditions in explaining the departure of so many local families: "This is when one hundred French families from south of the river departed Wednesday evening for Edmonton, Alberta, where they will take up homesteads and start life anew. They went over the Missouri Pacific, which road secured their patronage after a hard fight with competitors. Travelling freight agent Brown of Concordia accompanied them and will go as far as St. Paul Minnesota with them. It took twenty-one cars, coaches and freights to accommodate the party." (The Clyde Argus, January, 1894) The trip was a long hard one, deprived of comfort, taking seven to ten days. They had brought their possessions - at least what they felt was indispensable to start anew: machinery, wagons, horses, a few heads of livestock, a few crates of poultry, and indispensable house items and furniture. Francois-Xavier Cyre and his family leased two quarter sections of land for $25.00 each. As these were covered with solid bush, the first task to clear enough land to build his first home, a large one-room shack thatched with sod. Good insulation against the long below-zero weather! Three of the daughters had remained behind: two of them, Louise and Arthemise had married two young men of the Neault family and had settled down; and Josephine, who was not to marry, was said to be housekeeper in a rectory in Kansas for a number of years. The seven other children followed their parents to Canada."
