He was taken to a Hot Springs hospital, where he passed away about seven o'clock Sunday morning June 15. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Center Congregational church with the Rev. H.F. Beebe, pastor of the Methodist church at Creighton, officiating. Pallbearers were Charles Stevenson, Ora Ballard, Jack Crosley, Jack Luckert, Fred Lafrenz and Floyd Weaver. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery, Creighton. Mr. Barta was born Dec. 3, 1876 at Pischelville, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Barta. He attended school in Knox county and later went to Highland Park College at Des Moines, Ia. in 1901 and 1902. He was graduated from Wayne State Teachers college in 1903, after which he attended the University of Nebraska, where he received a bachelor of law degree in 1906. While attending the university, he was a leading football and baseball player. Later he played professional baseball with Kearney for a couple of seasons. He was married to Miss Rose Shimanek at Wilber November 26, 1906. Two daughters were born to them. The Bartas homesteaded in Jones county, South Dakota in 1906 and 1907. Mr. Barta operated a hardware and implement business at Verdigre from 1907 to 1910. He became clerk of the district court of Knox county in 1911, serving until 1920. From 1921 to 1936 he was a member of the Peterson and Barta Law Firm at Center and served several terms as assistant county attorney. He was also chairman of the village council many years. He became attorney for the Federal Land Bank in 1917. He was elected Knox county judge in November 1942 and took office the following January. He had served in the office since. Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. June Evans of Minden, Ia. and Mrs. Janice Ambrose of South Gate, Calif.
