In 1891 he was married to Millie Buford, born in 1870, daughter of Henry Buford of Fabius township. They have had three children: Mark H., seventeen; and Flossie fourteen; one child died in infancy. He moved from New Jersey to Washington county, Iowa when he was four years old and lived there on a farm until 1891 when he went to Ainsworth where he went into the well drilling business, putting up pumps and wind mills. In 1895 he came to Schuyler county and in 1896 bought the Dooley farm which was composed of 200 acres. At the time of its purchase he paid $21.00 per acre, but it is now worth about $40 per acre. He does general farming and raises all kinds of stock. He has a few Angora goats, and handles about twenty-five head of cattle and sheep a year. Mr. Hardin is a member of the Masonic lodge at Ainsworth and has been a member of the Baptist church for twenty-five years. Mrs. Hardin is also a member of the Baptist church. In politics he is a Democrat. Mr. Hardin has a well which is 116 feet deep on his farm. The water is mineral and very healthy. He has handled pure bred Duroc hogs ever since he has been in the county and was perhaps the first man to handle them there.
