Passed Away at Dickinson, North Dakota, Last Saturday. Saturday afternoon our citizens were surprised and pained to learn of the death of Hon. Frank Baker, brother of Geo. H. and W. C. Baker, of this place, which occurred at Dickinson, North Dakota. He had finished his duties at the state legislature and had just returned home when he was taken down with pneumonia. He lived but a few days. He had written to his sister, Mrs. Carl Starr, a week before he passed away and he seemed in the best of cheer. He announced to her that he would he married in June. The remains arrived in this city yesterday morning. Services were conducted at the Congregational church at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. E. Brereton assisted by Dr. W. T. Jackson, officiating. There were a large number in attendance. The burial was in Evergreen cemetery, where the father of the deceased, the late J. C. Baker, was laid to rest in 1902. The pall bearers were A. E. Baird and C. J. Kunz, of Company K, Dickinson, North Dakota, and J. E. Williams, Dr. J. L. Van Gordon, Fred Scott, and L. P. Stillman. The deceased was born in this county June 14, 1877. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Baker. He grew to manhood in this vicinity. In 1898, when the Spanish-American war broke out, he enlisted as a private in Company K. He spent several months at Chicamauga. There he formed many ties of friendship that he valued highly in after years. He became a member of Company K, of Dickinson, in which he served for some time as second lieutenant. The surviving members of the family are his mother, two brothers, Geo. H. and W. C., and one sister, Mrs. C. S. Starr, all of this city. The death of this most promising young man, in the bloom of health and strength, is a sad blow to his mother, brothers, and sister, and their grief is sincerely shared by our citizens in general. Frank will be remembered by our many local readers as a bright, hearty, gritty school boy. He frequently took part in the local debating and literary contests and his competitors invariably found him ready, resourceful, and admirably prepared to contest every point that might be raised. He was picked out by spectators as a young man who possessed natural ability of a high order. He was inspired by that determination which becomes stronger and more aggressive when face to face with reverses and disappointments. He was a member of the class of 1896, richly meriting the honors that were bestowed on him. The following fall he became a Student at the Iowa University, completing the classical course in 1900. He next entered the Minnesota University, finishing a course in law in 1902. Soon after he opened an office at Dickinson, North Dakota, in company with Attorney L. M. McBride. They proved a strong firm and they enjoyed a large and profitable practice. Last June Mr. Baker went into the primaries of Stark county, that state, as a republican candidate for representative and won. He was elected in November. He made a creditable record and had just returned to Dickinson to begin anew his labors as an attorney when he was summoned before him who sooner or later passes judgment on the motives and the actions of all. Mr. Baker was a young man who made the most of the opportunities that were given him. His career as a student was one of continuous application, of unwavering resolution to succeed. He fully realized the confidence that his parents and relatives had in him and he was determined not to disappoint them. He didn't, He more than made good. He won for himself high rank in his profession and well deserved recognition among those whom the people of North Dakota called to honorable and responsible official positions. He was taken away before he had scarcely reached manhood’s full powers, but he had accomplished more than most men of ability and opportunity achieve in a life-time. Though he took a serious view of affairs in general, he was not unmindful of the smaller things that lighten labor, that contribute substantially to the enjoyment and comfort of others, and that often banish gloom and sorrow. His kindness to his mother, who made her home with him during his residence in Dickinson, did much to endear him to all who appreciate the devotion and attention of the loving and dutiful son to the fond mother, who never loses an interest in any affair in which he is concerned. To her who feels most keenly die loss of her honored and faithful son, and to the brothers and sister residing in Emmetsburg, the sincere sympathy of our many citizens is extended. Aside from this, hundreds of our readers who know Mr. Baker as a boy and as a young man feel a deep personal loss in his rather sudden and untimely taking off.
