He died fully fortified with the Last Rites of the Catholic church of which he was a member. Mr. Gross was born at Henry, Ill., Aug 31, 1877, and came to Carroll county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Gross in 1882. His parents were both natives of Germany. Mr. Gross was born at Henry, Ill., Aug 31, 1877, and came to Carroll county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Gross in 1882. His parents were both natives of Germany. His father came to this country in 1865 from Luxenberg (sic) where he had been driving a coach from his hometown to Paris, France. Mr. Gross grew to young manhood on the farm in Maple River township, which his father purchased when the family moved to Carroll county. He was married Aug 20, 1904, to Miss Theresa Schiltz. They made their home in Maple River township for a while before moving to Wagner, S.D. For the last 13 years they have resided on their homeplace in Maple River township. Too much cannot be said of the sterling qualities of Mr. Gross. He was one of the substantial, hard-working men of the community, who was honest and sincere in all of his dealings. His home was one of outstanding joys of life. Enjoyable to him also was the companionship of his brothers, sister, and his mother. In the death of Mr. Gross the entire community suffers a loss. Surviving besides his wife and three children, Mrs. Genevieve Gehling, Edward and Dorothy, st home, are his mother, Mrs. Genevieve Gross of Carroll and the following brothers and sister, John, George, and Will Gross; and Mrs. Will Pietig of Carroll. His father died in 1903, a brother Otto Gross and a sister Mrs. Joe Timmerman, are also deceased. he was also preceded in death by a son Clarence at the age of 3 years. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at SS Peter and Paul Church at 9 o'clock.
