Description	:	John was the son of Mathias Gross and Genevieve Dentlinger. He was a farmer and then owned Gross Manufacturing which made farm equipment. Carroll Daily - Feb 4, 1932 - John Gross died this morning at 2:30 in St. Anthony hospital, where he was taken Jan 4 with a fractured hip, which with complications was the cause of his death. Burial will be in the Ss. Peter and Paul's cemetery. John, son of Mathias and Genevieve Gross was born in Bureau County, Illinois August 7, 1879 and came to Carroll county in February 1882. His occupation was farming until 25 years ago when he moved to Carroll, where he maintained the Gross Manufacturing company east of Franzwa's blacksmith shop, where he made end gates and farm equipment. He lived with his parents at 209 North Maple street and after their death continued to live in the old home. His father died in 1903 and his mother, June 23, 1930. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Otto Gross, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Timmerman (Anna.) Surviving relatives are two brothers and a sister: George Gross, living two and one-half miles west of Carroll, William Gross of Kniest township, a member of the board of supervisors of Carroll county, and Mrs. Paulina Pietig of Roselle township. Mr. Gross was a faithful member of Ss. Peter and Paul's church and died well fortified with the last sacraments of the church. He was also a member of Charles Carroll council, Knights of Columbus, and of the Holy Name sodality of Ss. Peter and Paul's parish. During his illness he was diligently cared for by the Sisters and nurses, but in spite of their efforts and medical aid, he passed away in the early hours this morning.
