A tribute to the life of Frank Jacob Mertz, 85, of Chico will be held at the Butte Creek Country Club from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001. He died Saturday, Sep. 8, 2001, at home. He was born Feb. 8, 1916, in Atlantic, Iowa to Hannah and John Mertz. He graduated from high school in Red Oak, Iowa in 1934. He graduated from Tarkio College in Missouri in 1938. He taught history and coached in the Midwest from 1938 to 1944, when he moved to Sacramento and worked for Coca-Cola Bottling until 1956. He moved to Chico in 1950. Part owner of Lemcke Furniture from 1956 to 1960, he then joined KPAY radio in 1960 as sales manager. In 1971, he became general manager and part owner of the station. He became semi-retired in 1984 and fully retired in 1991. He was awarded agriculturist of the year for developing the Frost Alert Network, had the ball field at the 20th Street Community Park is named for him, and was made part of the Red Oak High School Hall of Fame and the Chico Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Hall of Fame for the Northern California Old-Timers Sports Association and the Sports Hall of Fame at Tarkio College. He was a past president of the Northern California Sports Boosters Association, the Chico Sport Boosters Association, the Sacramento Valley Baseball League, the Greater Chico Chamber of Commerce and the Butte Creek Country Club. He received numerous community service awards from state and local government officials including the 1999 Chico Rotary Club Community Service Award. He loved sports and community and spent many years officiating basketball and football. KPAY radio started the Frank Mertz Golf Scramble to raise money for local high school sports, as golfing was a sport he enjoyed. He was also an avid reader who especially enjoyed American history. He is survived by wife Bette of 61 years; two daughters, Jacque Mertz of Craig, NE and Debra Jones of Forest Ranch; two grandchildren, Dianna Aulabaugh of Orland and Nathan Stevens of Reno, NV. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frank Mertz Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Bidwell Chapel. Private family services will be held Thursday.
