Fireman Frank Mahoney had come down from Crawford on a helper. While waiting at Belmont Mahoney had gone across to the depot to get a jug of water. When going back to his engine he was struck by another helper that was backing up. A doctor was sent down from Crawford on No. 42 and he with Engineer Bobbins brought him to the Alliance Hospital. His death occured about 7:30 Sunday a.m. None of his relatives had time to reach here, but Father McNamara was with him till the last. The father, two sisters and a brother arrived Monday noon. A short funeral service was held at the Darling undertaking parlors Monday evening. The party left for Ulysses on No. 42 where he will be laid beside his mother. The services in Ulysses will be conducted by Father Murphy. Frank James Mahoney was born in Lincoln, Nebr., Nov. 29, 1885. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Ulysses. Here the mother died when Frank was only eight years old. A sister, Miss Mary Mahoney, was a mother to him. She said that Frank was always such a good boy and never caused them any worry or trouble. He leaves a father, Mr. B. Mahoney, now of Denver, Miss Mary Mahoney of Bellwood, Nebr., a married sister, Mrs. N. Wiegardt of 330 Washington St., Denver, and three brothers, William, John and George of Ulysses, Nebr. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), April 12, 1911, p. 3, col. 4 In Memoriam. The people of Ulysses were indeed shocked last week concerning the railroad accident and death of Frank J. Mahoney, son of B. Mahoney, a former resident of Ulysses, who met death by a car passing over one of his limbs while boarding his train at Bellmont April 1st. He was taken to the Mercy hospital at Alliance and everything possible done for him. Amputation became necessary on Sunday, the following day, Father McNamara being with him during the trying ordeal. The operation seemed successful and the patient rallied and chatted with friends, but later he sank and passed away at 7 o'clock Sunday evening, aged 26 yrs., 5 mos. and 27 days, leaving a father, two sisters and three brothers. From a small day Frank had wished to be an engineer. He had failed twice to pass the required examination, but the third time succeeded, and was to have an engine in 1912, having been fireman the past three years. He had a cheerful nature, made friends everywhere, and though temptation and danger surrounded him he lived the life of a practical Catholic. Deceased carried life insurance, belonged to the Burlington Relief, also had an interest in a Building and Loan Assoc'n. Services were held at the undertakers' chapel in Alliance by Rev. McNamara, after which the Brotherhood held services and preceded the body to depot. An intimate friend and brother fireman, Thos. Rowland, accompanied the stricken relatives to Ulysses and back to their home in Denver. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church April 5, at 10 o'clock, Rev. Father Murphy officiating who preached a touching sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. A Friend.
