Elwell died at his home on West Main street, Sunday evening at 8:30, of a heart attack and complications, following influenza. He was born near Bloom, now Chicago Heights, Illinois, July 12, 1855, the son of John and Jane Elwell. His early life was spent in Illinois and near Algona, Iowa. On March 6, 1877, he was married to Harriet Susan Cooper of Crete, Illinois. After living in Illinois one year, he and his wife and baby daughter came to Iowa where they were located on a farm four and a half miles southwest of La Porte City where Mrs. Elwell died December 29, 1917. Five years later (1922) Mr. Elwell married Mrs. D. W. O’Neal at Long Beach, California, and they had fifteen years together there until her death in 1917. After 20 years of a residence in Long Beach, Mr. Elwell returned to La Porte City to make his home. At the time of his death he was a member of the Grace Methodist Church at Long Beach and of Trowel Lodge A.F.& A.M., of La Porte City. Surviving are five children, Mrs. Mabel Nichols, Mrs. C.C. Hager and Lucy Elwell all of La Porte City; Mrs. W.P. Thorpe, Los Cruces, N.M., a son, Clarke of Nevada, Iowa; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a twin sister, Mrs. Frances Rice, Crete, Illinois; a brother, Will E. Campbell, Gilmore City, three stepsons, and a stepdaughter. Three daughters and one son preceded him. Since the death of Mrs. Elwell his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Nichols has kept his home and in his last illness she was aided in caring for him by S.C. Elwell, of Nevada, Iowa. Mr. Elwell was a man of remarkable vigor and personality and until his illness was in superior physical condition. He retained his faculties until the very last. Burial took place February 9th. After a brief prayer service at the Barnhart and Johannsen funeral home, the rites were continued in the Methodist church. Rev. Ralph Supplee officiated, assisted by Trowel Lodge A.F.&A.M. with their ritualistic service Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Froning sang two selections, accompanied by Mrs. Clifford Burr. Casket bearers were J.W. Kober, M.T. Anderson, Ralph Nichols, R.B. Tripp, A.A. Robertson and Harlan Hager. Interment was made in West View cemetery. Among those from out of town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Will E. Campbell and son, Bain of Gilmore City; Mr. and Mrs. Chas, Schirred of Garner, Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Elwell and Mrs. Arthur Hobson of Nevada; Mrs. Nina Bailey of Neb., Mrs. H.M. Glew of Preston; Mr. and Mrs. D.G. Coper of Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Parker and son, Neil, Mrs. W.H. Sith, Miss Alice Kerr, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Runyan, Mr. and Mrs. Emory Simon and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Patava of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Will O’Neil and Betty of Orange twp., Mr. and Mrs. Ralph O’Neil, Mr. and Mrs. John Kerr and Gertrude of Eagle Center; Mrs. John Holmes and Mr. Dale Holmes of Hudson.
