The young man and his mother, Mrs. D.S. Piel, returned to Hastings Wednesday of last week from Crescb, Iowa, where they had been visiting Mrs. Piel’s daughter, Mrs. Jerry Clark, and he became ill en route. He was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. W.R. Chrisman where physicians attended him. His condition was so serious that he was taken to the hospital and operated on the same evening. Sunday evening complications developed and in an effort to save Mr. Piel's life a second operation was necessary, but the nature of the trouble was such that all efforts failed and he passed away Monday evening at 6:40. The funeral services were conducted Thursday forenoon at the Christian church, Rev. A.L. Ogden, preaching the sermon. The body was laid to rest in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Frank Piel was born in Adams county, northeast of Blue Hill on Sept. 8, 1879, his parents being among the pioneer families of this region. His death came as a great surprise to his many friends as he had always enjoyed rugged health and few here knew that he was ill. Mr. Piel was a bachelor and had always resided on the old home place.
