It looked quietly efficient in the early morning as the man who had sat there many years. Frank Serpan, the office clerk, was dead at 43. He died as quietly as he worked, although he had known for at least three months that he was suffering from an incurable disease. He seldom gave any indication of his suffering. Only once did he refer to it, when he said to a couple of fellow employees a lunch: "I am not as fortunate as you fellows - I won't be around much longer." After his death near midnight Monday, Postal Inspector F.W. Anderson opened a letter that Mr. Serpan had handed to him on July 27. In it Mr. Serpan asked that a "modest, inexpensive casket be picked out" and that only a small, flat stone mark his grave, next to that of his father. He asked no flowers be sent, that any money be turned over to the Central United Presbyterian Church Educational Unit building fund. Mr. Serpan named his pallbearers. Among them was Omaha Symphony Orchestra Conductor Richard E. Duncan, for whom Mr. Serpan often soloed on the oboe. He also played with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra. His ruling passion, beside family activities with his wife, daughter and son at his home, was music. Beside playing in the symphony orchestras, he sometimes played the saxophone in local orchestras. In 1921 he was elected president of the Omaha Musicians Association. For himself in the letter to Mr. Anderson he asked only one thing: That "Conductor Duncan be called to see if a small group arranged through Local 70 could play a selection at his funeral: Debussy's "Claire de Lune." Grossman officiating. Committal Bohemian National Cemetery. Family requests in lieu of flowers donations to Central United Presbyterian Church Educational Unit Building Fund.
