He departed this life at Geneva, Fillmore Co. Neb., February 13, 1927. He was the son of James W. and Elizabeth Sloan, each of whom passed away a few years ago at Geneva. His parents were pioneers and at the time of his birth, there were four other living children. Three months previous to that date the oldest child, Sarah, a child of special attainments, passed away, leaving the parents in serious grief. This frail man-child and the deceased daughter resembled in disposition, form and facial lineaments, the mother. The new life tended to reconcile the mother in her bereavement, and the child, up boyhood’s way, and along manhood’s path, gave that care and sympathy to both parents which a daughter might give and more than that, manifested his large concern in life in the making of the way easy for father and mother. It was the settled and oft emphasized purpose of the parents in this family that education should be the children’s highest ambition. It was therefore a matter of extreme satisfaction for this elderly couple, in the afternoon of life, to behold not only the education achieved, but also his successful business life. The deceased was educated in the public schools in Monticello, and later in Taylor county, Iowa, attending for two brief terms an academy at Stansberry, Mo., and later a couple of years at Ames in the Iowa State College. In 1892, he taught school in the northern part of Fillmore county, studied law in the office of his brother, Charles H. Sloan of Geneva, working for $25 per month and board. A striking example to many young men and women, who whatever their monthly or early earnings may be, insist that the cost of living takes it all, and pay no attention to thrift. The means for spending money then were relatively little less than now. The opportunities for advancement then were less than they are now, if for no other reason than that there was a greater per cent of real competitors for the prizes and opportunities at that time than there are now. Mr. Sloan was admitted to the bar before the district court of Fillmore county, Nebraska, in 1895. He became associated in practice with his brother, Charles H. Sloan, and John J. Burke, which association has continued up to the present time, unbroken, save by the death of Mr. Burke in 1919. For a period of four years from January 1, 1895, until January 1, 1899, he was deputy under County Attorney John Barsby. He had learned well to serve and assist, so that when he came into his own, he knew how to judge and command real assistance. Twice elected county attorney, by large majorities, he served in that capacity from January 1, 1899 to January 1, 1903. During his incumbency, he enjoyed the unfaltering confidence of the board of supervisors and county officers generally. He believed that laws were placed upon the statute books for enforcement and he early impressed courts, officers and jurors with that fact. But he realized it was his duty to find and present opportunely and in best form the available convicting evidence. Few persons charged by him with crime escaped the law, through court dismissal or juries finding not guilty. He was a vigorous prosecutor. He gave the defense little pause or rest, once he was convinced of guilt, until the jury had finished its deliberations. He did not seriously cultivate the graces of the orator, nor spend much time in the refinement of rhetoric, but of that logic consisting of large facts and patent principles quickly told, without too much tribute paid to sequence, or rule, he connected with the mental operations of his jury and seldom failed to thoroughly and soundly convince. If his life teaches no other lesson, it emphasizes that honor which he paid with lavish hand and loving heart upon his father and mother. It should be a salutary lesson to the young men and women of this generation. The last quarter of a century of his business life was largely taken up with real estate and banking interests. He loved Nebraska, had confidence in its soil, and believed it to be the best part of the American corn belt, which in turn is the best part of the globe’s surface. Prior to, and during the war, he directed some dozen banks in this and adjoining counties. Each of them was reduced to a substantial dependable basis and enjoyed the confidence of the community without leaning upon an artificial guarantee, which he believed must ultimately fail. When many banks, especially in other communities, were through their officers listening to the sire songs of blue-sky venters, Frank Sloan not only refused to invest, but resorted to heroic measures to prevent investment by his banks, patrons and all persons of the community. He brought down upon himself the harsh criticism and the threats of legal prosecution of all high-powered salesmen, operating in this part of the state. He whipped them from his banks as the money changers were in that ancient day driven from the temple. At large expense and risk, he published in the local and other papers, warnings against this class of investments, signed such statements, paid for publishing the same, without any reward, or hope of reward, save doing good to his fellowmen, and inculcating sound business principles in the profession of which he had become such a notable character. At the close of the war and shortly thereafter, he was one of the first to perceive and one of the few to drastically act upon the inevitable deflation of values, here and elsewhere. He strengthened securities and made the collections then appearing doubtful, but which if left alone, thereafter would have become impossible. He said to his stockholders, we will do without dividends. Our banks will have to pay $50,000 or more to keep other banks open. We do not desire any bank to contribute to our continuance. He was a devoted director and factor in our county fair association, and with his co-workers, some of whom are now with him in the Great Beyond, built up one of the largest, soundest, county fair associations in the state. These are a few of the concrete things he did, that in no wise compare however with his achievements in the developing of young men, whom he would take to his side, train, trust and give larger and widened responsibilities, until they became masters in businesses of their own. But greater far than these are those tens of thousands of acts which will never be recorded. Many thousands of individuals were helped without publicity, and he saved many a struggling business, kept the owner upon his farm, and retrieved the mistakes of boy and girl. He saved the reputations, rightfully or wrongfully assailed, of many who are now business men and women. In many unclassifiable, Frank Sloan dad that which seemed manly by those who knew and must have been considered of merit in the sight of God. There survive him three brothers and one sister: William J. Sloan of Palisade, Neb.; Charles H. Sloan of this city; Mrs. Elmer Sickels of Athelstan, Ia., and Robert J. Sloan of Kansas City, Mo. Five of his brothers and sisters died in infancy. He also leaves six nephews and four nieces; while the coming of a number of grand-nephews and grand-nieces have, in turn, gladdened his heart. He was a member of Geneva lodge No. 79, A.F. &A.M.; of Triune Chapter Royal Arch Masons, No. 41; of Odd Fellow lodge No. 65; and of Knights of Pythias lodge, formerly No. 73. August 4, 1924, Mr. Sloan suffered an attack of paralysis and other seizures followed. Thirty months and nine days elapsed between his first stroke and the loosening of the golden chord. During all that time the free virile movement which so characterized him was checked, and his speech chained. For fifteen months the windows were darkened and the face of friend and the beauty of nature were denied him. Yet, content with unimpaired hearing, he listened to the sweet music of speech and voice, and enjoyed the one great faculty the Lord had spared him. It was a blessing properly, to be recognized and long to be remembered that this man of high nervous organization, driving ambition, and almost brookless purpose could, and did, under the ministrations of those in attendance and friends about him, manifest the sweetest disposition and finest consideration for all and never abating that manly struggle to live, and in part recover his faculties and strength. Yet, never, was there a reproach against his affliction, or rebuke or complaint against ah All-Wise Providence, in whose care he was, and in whose presence he now is. The funeral took place from the Methodist Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. yesterday and was conducted by Rev. H. G. Langley, pastor of the church and Rev. David Tudor, pastor of the Geneva Congregational Church. Mr. Langley read the above biography and Mr. Tudor delivered the address. The Masonic quartet sang two numbers and Mrs. A. H. Elder sang, “Face to Face.” The Masonic order was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Immediately following the funeral service, lunch was served in the church basement to the funeral party, including the Masonic escort, the members of which left immediately thereafter by automobile for Lincoln with the body to deposit it in a receiving vault at Wyuka Cemetery. A family mausoleum is to be erected in the Geneva cemetery for the permanent reception of the bodies of Mr. Sloan and his parents. The pallbearers were Lyman Brooke, Dr. I. W. McEachran, Dr. W. E. Propst, Fred Camp, Francis Putlitz and Thomas N. Burke. The following were appointed honorary pallbearers: C. A. McCloud, J.M. Ward, R. M. Proudfit, J. K. Waring, L.W. Frazier, W.R. Fulton, Charles Smrha, H.P. Wilson, Lee Huston, F.J. Sieber, W. P. Wallace, Jacob Weis, John P. Davis, H. F. Putlitz, John Barsby, F. B. Donisthorpe, R. A. Matteson, A. H. Steven, C.C. Sloan, 55, prominent Nebraska lawyer and banker, died here Sunday, following a paralytic stroke. Mr. Sloan had never fully recovered from a previous stroke in August, 1924. Sloan, a former president of the First National Bank of Hastings, at one time, owned and controlled 13 banks in Fillmore and adjoining counties. At one time he was president and large stockholder in the Bruning State Bank. He was also at one time the largest land owner in Fillmore County. He was a brother of former Congressman Charles H. Sloan. He was unmarried.
