Our little city was thrown into a hushed silence of sorrow last Friday evening when the news was circulated that F. W. Strickler had passed away at 8:20 o'clock. The announcement was a great surprise to all, as he had been sick only a short time. Up until about Wednesday noon he was not considered to be in a dangerous state, but from that time on he gradually sank lower and at the above mentioned time departed this life. A short service was held at the home of the deceased Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. C. B. Campbell. The service was then taken in charge by the Masonic and Modern Woodman of America lodges, of which he was a member. The procession marched to the Masonic cemetery, where a very impressive ceremony was performed. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved wife and relatives. The obituary will be published in Friday's issue of the Standard." From the Skidmore Standard (Skidmore, Missouri), Friday, March 6, 1903, page 1, column 1: "Frank W. Strickler was born near Camp Point, Adams county, Ill., on October 19, 1863, and died of pneumonia fever at his home in Skidmore, Mo., on Friday, February 27 at 8:20 p.m. after an illness of only a few days. His sudden death was a great surprise to his many friends and a very severe shock to his amiable wife and immediate relatives. Frank was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. David Strickler, who now reside in Maryville, Mo., and have many sympathizing friends and acquaintances in our community. He leaves two brothers and a sister. They are: Ed and Ray Strickler and Mrs. Cora Wright, all of whom attended the funeral services held at the residence on Elm street, march 1, at 2:30 p.m. He was married to Miss Leona Bottorff, January 24, 1884, and this union continued one of peace and pleasantness until broken by the relentless power of Death - which sooner or later must sever every earthly tie. Mr. and Mrs. Strickler came to Atchison County, Mo., in 1885 where they spent one and one-half years on a farm, and from there to a farm five miles northeast of Skidmore where they lived until 1895. Since 1895 they have lived in Skidmore and have been numbered among the first and most enterprising citizens of town. Frank has been associated in business with many of our merchants and by his genial disposition has continued to win friends who were friends, indeed. He was diligent and by energy and thrift so exercised his good judgment as to make ample provisions for just such sudden emergencies as came to his companion in the hour of his decease. It is needless to say that the beautiful and symbolizing wreaths of flowers and the multitude attending the farewell funeral services, the long procession of Free Masons and Modern Woodmen of America, with their beautiful uniforms and appropriate rites at the grave, attest his value as a citizen, his nobleness and friendship, and, as well, the real sorrow of an entire community. His nearest neighbors, who knew him best, sorrow most and tenderly extend the hand of loving kindness to his devoted and sorrow stricken companion." Note: Leona Bottorff Strickler married Jackson M. Hutt on December 28, 1904. The couple later lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and they took in Mildred Strickler (daughter of Edgar Ross and Britomarte H. Rice Strickler) , who lived with them until her marriage. Leona Bottorff Strickler Hutt died on June 3, 1950 in Los Angeles.
