Read More	June 3, 1915 - Frank Dangel, a resident of the county for many years, committed suicide at his home on South Main street, last Friday morning by hanging himself. The deed was committed in an unfinished room of the house, a strap being used as the means. This strap was attached to a rafter and Mr. Dangel seems to have stood on a box while he adjusted the noose around his neck. This done he kicked the box from beneath him. His feet were barely touching the floor when his body was found but it is probable that the strap had stretched some under the weight. The cause of the act was despondency due to the death a few weeks ago of his wife, added to a chronic ailment from which he has long suffered. The only person occupying the house with him was a twelve year old granddaughter of his wife by a former marriage. After the shocking event took place the little girl was able to recall a number of things that indicate that the act had been pre-meditated for some time, although previous to the event little importance had been attached to the incidents. A day or two previous to the one on which he committed suicide he measured the depth of the water in the cistern, which would indicate that he had thought of drowning as a method of suicide. He had also made inquiry as to the whereabouts of the clothes line, which he sometimes used in the the garden for securing straight rows of things planted by him. This had been mislaid and he was unable, to find it. On Thursday evening he suggested to the little girl that she go to the moving picture show, but as she had otherwise planned her evening she did not act on the suggestion, although he was inclined to urge that she attend. Friday morning he suggested that she should attend the funeral of Mr. Shoemaker, to which she assented. He showed a singular impatience to hurry her out of the house, reminding her that she must not be late, a number of times before the hour for the funeral arrived. It can scarcely be doubted that all these things had a bearing on his intention to end his life. He evidently wished that there should be no one in the house when he committed the act, in order that there might be no possibility of interference with his plans. The little girl discovered his body hanging in the unfinished room on her return from the church and alarmed the neighbors. The body was cut down by John Bayer, who lives near by. Frank Dangel was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, March 31, 1844, and was 71 years and two months old at the time of his death. He had suffered for several years from a chronic ailment, which doubtless hastened his death, which took place Friday morning, May 28th. He came to the United States when a young man, his first home being at Galesburg, Illinois. A few years later he came to Carroll county, settling in Roselle township in 1871 or 1872. Shortly after coming to this county he was married to Miss Rosina Benzkofer, by whom he had one son, Raymond Dangel, who is a farmer in this county. His first wife having died he was married a second time in 1911, being united to Mrs. Johanna Kurtz, who died a few weeks ago and since whose death he has been very despondent. For nearly thirty years he was a farmer in Roselle township but moved to Carroll about fifteen years ago since which time he has been a resident of this city. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's church and also of the Holy Name Society. His funeral was held on Monday morning from the home of the church. He was buried in the cemetery.
