(Jack) Wilkie of Clark, South Dakota, formerly of Villisca, informed them their son, Pvt. Franklin H. Wilkey, was reported missing in action in Korea, September 3, 1950. Last week a communication from the department informed them that the bronze star medal for heroic action has been awarded to him. Private Wilkey, who was 17 years old, was inducted into the Army March 6, 1950 and left Fort Riley, Kansas, July 5. He lacked but three days of being in the service six months. The last word his parents had from him was the letter dated last August 6 which they received from him in Korea. The letter written by Maj. Gen. Edward F. Witsell, adjutant, general of the war department, Washington, D. C. Telling Mr. and Mrs. Wilkey of the award to their son reads: "I have the honor to inform you that, by direction of the President, the bronze star medal with the letter "V" device has been awarded to your son, Private Franklin H. Wilkey, infantry, for heroic achievement in action during the period 31 August to 3 September, 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. Since this award cannot be formally presented to your son in view of his present status, the decoration will be presented to you with appropriate ceremony. The engraved medal with pertinent correspondence will be forwarded to the commanding general, Fifth Army Chicago, 15, Illinois, who will select an officer to communicate directly with you and arrange the ceremony in accordance with your wishes and convenience."
