"Died—February 24th, aged 43 years, 11 months and 16 days. The solemn duty of paying the last tributes of love and respect to an honored citizen was responded to Wednesday by the citizens of Spencer and the surrounding country. A large congregation of friends and relatives assembled at the Christian church at 10 o'clock a.m. to attend the funeral services. The services at the church were conducted by Rev. A. L. Shoop, who preached an appropriate sermon from 1st Cor. 15:26. Members of Spencer Lodge No.47, A.O.U.W., escorted the remains to the cemetery and conducted the services at the grave. F.S. Hammitt was born in Toledo, Tama county Iowa, on March 8, 1856, came to Dakota with his parents in the spring of 1880, was united in marriage to Miss Mary Martin November 1882, came to Spencer and opened a drug business in the fall of '88, and was identified with the growth and prosperity of the town for nine years. During the hard times which prevailed in the town's growth F.S. Hammitt's name could always be found among the list of those who contributed in money and influence toward any and all things tending to improve morally, socially and financially the interests of the town. Mr. Hammitt sold his drug store in the spring of 1897 to J.J. Myles and removed to Montrose where he was employed as druggist by W.E. Miller, with whom he continued for two years, when he accepted a position with the Alcester Drug Co. This Co. sent him to Marion to take charge of their business at that place, where he resided when he died February 24, from the effects of pulmonary congestion and heart failure. Immediately upon receipt of the news of his death the Workman of Spencer Lodge sent Mr. C.F. Nickel and O.C. Lindekugel to Marion to look after the wife and little ones. His remains were brought to Spencer for interment where they arrived on Monday. Owing to the inability of his brother to get here the funeral was postponed until Wednesday the 28. His brother Henry Hammitt of Minneapolis arrived Tuesday evening, and Wednesday all that was mortal of our friend Frank Hammitt was placed in its final resting place. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife and five children, an aged father and mother, one brother, a sister and a host of friends. His intimate friends and relatives from out of town that was present were Henry Hammitt of Minneapolis, W. S. Turner and wife, Blue Earth City, Minn., Mrs. Frank Laraway of Spencer, Iowa, W. E. Miller and wife and W. Jerome of Montrose. A.P. and H.P. Hoard of Alcester. The above is from the Spencer News of Spencer, South Dakota. The father of the deceased, Hugh Hammitt was a carpenter in an early day in Toledo. Tama county relatives and friends sympathize with afflicted."
