Read More	Billings Gazette, Tuesday, 22 Jan. 2002 Fred “Freddie” Benner, age 91, passed away Jan. 20, 2002, in his home, surrounded by his loving family, with the caring help of the many from Big Sky Hospice. Fred was born in Park City in 1910, one of the youngest sons of German immigrants George and Katherine Benner. HE spent the first 17 years at the family farm on the Yellowstone River. HE left the area for Butte, where he began his duo careers as a butcher and boxer. His boxing career took him to the Los Angeles area and then to the Great Lakes, before returning to Billings, where he married Clara Zeiler, his wife of 68 years. He again returned to his career as a butcher and eventually assistant superintendent at the Pierce Packing Co., where he worked until his retirement in 1974. During this time, many meat cutters learned their craft from Freddie. He also used his skill of boxing to train young boxers for the Golden Gloves. He and his wife, Clara raised two daughters and two sons during this time. He had a great love of the outdoors and nature and nurtured his love by his avocations of hunting, training dogs, snowmobiling and most of all, fishing. His fishing passion was shared by many, but especially his family at the family farm and at the family cabin on Rock Creek at the 400 Ranch in Red Lodge. Other avocations include his graduation in auctioneering at the Rocky Mountain College, his fly tying, his painting, his taxidermy and his achievements in building family homes and cabins. In later retirement, he created canes for the “older folks” from branches he found on the rivers he fished. He and Clara were members of the Live Wires at Faith Evangelical Church. He is dearly loved and will be missed by many whose hearts he touched for his storytelling, his vast knowledge and his ability to teach and share skills and hobbies. He was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Alex, Adolph, Herman and Henry; sisters, Katie, Mary, Lena and Sarah; his granddaughter, Pam Donaugh; and his two sons-in-laws, Ed Donaugh and Ray Romine. Survivors include his wife, Clara; daughters, Marlene Donaugh and Chris Romine; sons, Darrell (Marlene) and Mark (Lorna); eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West, Saturday, Jan. 26. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and prior to services Saturday at Smith West Chapel
