In 1909, Fred and his parents went to Rosenheim, North Russia on the Volga River to get their son, Alex who had stayed with his grandparents. They returned to Chicago within a year. Fred started school in Chicago then in September 1918, moved with his parents to the Willa area and finally settled north of New Leipzig. Bertha was born at Robinson, North Dakota, to Elizabeth Wohl and Christian Frey, the family moved to the Elgin area in 1918. They homesteaded northwest of Elgin. Bertha and Fred were married January 19, 1932, at New Leipzig. They lived on a farm south of there. Fred hauled coal with horses and wagon from the Roberts Coal Mine to the railroad and drove a school bus. They moved into New Leipzig in 1936 where Fred continued to drive school bus and worked for Hetzlers Garage and on WPA. Bertha worked as a housemaid. They moved to Elgin in 1939 where they rented a Standard Service Station, while Fred hauled fuel, Bertha tended to the service station. They purchased the Dittus garage building in 1943, and remodeled it into Alts Supply Store. They formed a partnership in 1946 with Fred's brother Art. The business became a Coast to Coast Store and in 1965 their share of the partnership was sold to Art. Fred semi-retired but ran Fred's Repair Shop until 1980. They were active in the community and church. Bertha sewed more than 1200 quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Their home, purchased in 1944, at one time served as a post office, cream station, telegraph office, shoe and harness repair shop and a beer joint.
