He grew up on the farm with four brothers and two sisters then graduated in 1942 from New Leipzig High School. Art married Elinor Martell, daughter of Jacob and Christina Guthmiller Martell. He grew up on the farm with four brothers and two sisters then graduated in 1942 from New Leipzig High School. Art married Elinor Martell, daughter of Jacob and Christina Guthmiller Martell. Elinor was born October 26, 1927, on a farm 2.5 miles south of Elgin. Elinor lived on this farm until 1938 when her mother married Fred Schaible and moved with them to a farm one mile north of Elgin. In 1941, she moved into Elgin when her parents retired. Elinor graduated from Elgin High School. Art and Elinor were married by Reverend Ernest Widenhoefer in the Zion American Lutheran Church parsonage on May 28, 1944. They lived with and farmed with Art's parents until January 1946, when Art formed a partnership with his brother, Fred in Alt's Supply Store. In 1965, Art and Elinor purchased Fred's share of the partnership and their son Art Jr. joined them in the Coast to Coast Store. Art served as the Mayor of Elgin. The couple had three children; Ann (Henry) Eslinger, Sandra (Dennis) Schmitz and Art Jr. (Shirla Roth).
