Frederick Douglas DeLong b. 1923. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Final Tribute Paid to Three Drowning Victims 1955 Bridgewater Bulletin Hundreds of people from many parts of the country paid their final tribute to the men who lost their lives in the tragic drowning at Nile Mile Lake on Saturday, May 14th. All three victims, Fred C. deLong, Carman C. delong, and Basil G. Oickle were widely known and highly esteemed. They were well-known not only in business but for the active part they played in the affairs of the community being associated with every good work for the advancement of the villages in which they lived. Their passing is an irreparable loss and their places will be heard to fill. The funeral services for the late Fred C. DeLong were held on Wednesday morning, May 18th., with a private service at the home, followed by service in Barss Corners United Church of Canada. Brother members of Pine Grove Lodge No. 111, I.O.O.F., attended in a body and the committal service was conducted by Noble Grand Owen MacKay and Chaplain Max Feindel. Members of the Community Band of which Mr. DeLong was organizer and bandmaster, attended and formed the choir. Burial was in Barss Corners Community Cemetery. Mr deLong is survived by his widow, the former Miss Ethel Hirtle, Mahone Bay; one daughter, Judith(Mrs. John Mader); and two sons, George and Fred Jr., all of Barss Corners. Final tribute to Carman deLong was paid on Wednesday afternoon at Epworth United Church of Canada, New Germany, when members of the Canadian Legion, under Zone Commander Fred Fox Jr., of Lunenburg and Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, formed a guard of honour at the church. Both this funeral and that of his father were conducted by Rev. Arnold H. Mitton and Student Pastor Mr. W. Fraser. Also present were former pastors of the church, Rev. S.J. MacQueen, of Sydney; and Rev. G.W. Sach, of Pugwash; both personal friends of the deceased; and Lieut. Bradley of the Salvation Army; and Rev. Frank Locke of the Baptist Church. Burial was in the New Germany Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Vera Silver, New Germany; one daughter, Sharon; and two sons, David and Dale, at home. Funeral services for the late Basil G. Oickle were held on Thursday afternoon, when Epworth United Church was thronged with sorrowing friends and relatives and hundreds stood outside to hear the service over the public address system. Rev. A.H. Mitton conducted the service and assisting were former pastors, Rev. S.J. MacQueen and Rev. G.W. Sach. Also on the platform was the Student Supply of the church, Mr. W. Fraser. A small choir was under the direction of Mrs. George Zwicker. The Boy Scouts, under command of Scoutmaster Harold Weiland, honoured their late sponsor by forming a guard of honour at the entrance of the church. Also attending were members of the Independentt Order of Oddfellows. Evidence of the high regard in which these men were held was shown by the profusion of beautiful flowers at all services.
