Read More	Buried Dec 16, 1945 Lot 410 Space- Fred Gerald Frame Oct 20,1901-Dec 10,1945 Fred was born on October 20, 1901 after the family moved to Pleasanton in Buffalo County. He was known to his siblings as ''Stretch´´ or ''Shine´´. As a young man, he did farm work for the family. But in his late twenties his cousin, Clarence Reiter, put him to work as a dragline operator. They were digging irrigation and/or drainage ditches in western Nebraska. He was a mechanic as well as an operator. I learned from Fred, that operators of draglines and cranes are under considerable stress and pressure. Dragline operators who are loading trucks worry about drivers positioning their trucks so that the clamshell of the dragline will not knock the cab and driver off the truck. Crane operators must lift loads over peoples´ heads, and a lapse of attention can invite disaster. It was a very dangerous occupation. In about 1929, he bought a 1918 Hudson touring car, a seven passenger monster with a big six-cylinder engine. I don´t remember ever seeing the top up, maybe it didn´t have one. The cigar lighter was permanently attached to a wire that retracted onto a spring-loaded reel when the lighter was returned to it´s socket. In those days, all sporty cars, and some not so sporty, had cutouts. A cutout was a butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe just ahead of the muffler. When the cutout was open, the exhaust would be deflected downward, raising a lot of dust, and making a hell of a noise, to the delight of the driver. Fred went a step further. From the outlet of the cutout, he routed the exhaust through a pipe that terminated at the entrance of a three or four inch diameter steel pipe, about three feet long, that was mounted under the car. The roar from that big engine would not only stampede the chickens, but the steel pipe would ring, producing a harmony of treble and bass. It was really quite something! Sometime in the thirties, he worked in Arkansas where he got malaria. He spent part of the winter of 1936 with us (his sister Mabel Rice in Kearney). The ground was frozen then and he couldn´t work. Not long after that, he met Mary Francisco - the woman he would marry. They relocated to Provo, Utah and other places where there was work. When World War II began, he got a job in Wilmington, California working on the construction of a gasoline refinery. On December 10, 1945 (when he was just 44 years old), he had a heart attack on the job, and died suddenly. We suspect that the malaria had weakened his heart. He was buried in the North Platte Cemetery near other members of the family.
