Longford, Kansas, had just such an outstanding character, Fred J. Bowen, who died Sunday night, November 24th, at his home near there. Born in Michigan City, Indiana, he succumbed the lure of the west in his early teens and came to the great spreading plains of Kansas, where he herded cattle on the open range. Very faithfully this young lad watched the herds by day and kept careful vigil over them by night. Later he owned cattle of his own, first renting range for them and later purchasing pasture land and fencing it. For many years he lived the life of a bachelor--but not the kind of bachelor uaually associated with the word. This young man had a real ranch home and became and excellent cook, doing the cooking himself for the many ranch hands he always employed. He was an expert in the making of hot biscuts and pancakes. His mother, in her declining years, made her home with him, and he devoted himself to her care. After her death, he took unto himself a bride, who became the capable, hospitable, mistress of the ranch home. Many people from far and near, from city and from countryside, wisited this ranch. It extends its kindly welcome to high and low, millionaire and peasant, every one receiving a cheery greeting from Fred and Carrie, as they were familiarly known by those who knew them best. Most thrilling were the adventures related by this man of the prairie of his experiences in the early cattle days of Kansas, his many trips to Texas, the blizzards, and narrow escapes from death on the windswept Kansas plains. On his ranch of thousands of acres, he handled from two to six thousand head of cattle each year. In addition, he was engaged in quite extensive farming and wheat raising. In spite of his intense activity and the financial problems which cattle men in the past few years have had to meet. Mr. Bowen remained young and straight and strong. It must be the fresh dew of the early mornings, the beauty of the hills, the soft winds of the prairie, as he rode about his vast acreage, that accounted for his energy and vigor. And to match his fine fhysique was the high quality of his moral character, his cleanliness of habits, his integrity and honor, and withal, his kindness to his fellowman. The death of Fred Bowen occasioned great sorrow among the home folks around Longford, and all over the state of Kansas, as he was well known among the stockmen and cattle breeders. His type of man is not often found and this section was indeed fortunate to have such a fine citizen. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Carrie Bowen, other relatives and countless friends. Funeral servives were held at the Longford Evangelical Church Wednesday afternoon, November 27th, at two o'clock. Rev. Dewitt T. Miller offficiated and burial was made in the Rose Meron Cemetery. A great concourse of friends and neighbors came to pay honor to their distinguished friend and the profusion of flowers were silent expression of high regard. Found on the 1870 Census that Fred's father was H. L. Bowen and mother was Martha F. Bowen. Found Martha F. Bowen with one of her daughter, Lilley on the 1880 Census and Martha was listed as Divorced. Henry Lewis Bowen is Fred's father.
