Description	:	Fred McCaskell was the son of pioneering parents, was a local grain elevator manager and farmer through most of his working life, retired some years before his death in February 1960. He had come to Dakota Territory with his parents Mr. and Mrs. William McCaskell in 1882 from Grand Meadow (Mower County), Minnesota. For some years he was a grain buyer for the Robinson elevator in De Smet (Kingsbury County), South Dakota, later owned and operated a farm in Spirit Lake Township (northeast of De Smet). He had come to Dakota Territory with his parents Mr. and Mrs. William McCaskell in 1882 from Grand Meadow (Mower County), Minnesota. For some years he was a grain buyer for the Robinson elevator in De Smet (Kingsbury County), South Dakota, later owned and operated a farm in Spirit Lake Township (northeast of De Smet). After he retired from farming, he operated a dairy in De Smet. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Gordon Richards, pastor, officiating. Burial was in De Smet Cemetery beside his wife who died in 1955. Surviving Mr. McCaskell are one brother, James, Sioux City and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Warner of Sioux City and Millie Whalen, Fremont Nebraska and six children. Spending the years from the age of 11 to manhood in the community, Mr. McCaskell was married March 4, 1892 to Miss Ella Larson. Seven children were born to them. Merle and Bernelle of De Smet, James of Kadoka, Thelma (Mrs. Durmond Nelson) of Huron, Joyce (Mrs. Ross Newman) of Santa Ana, California, Ruth (Mrs. James Lundstrom) of Fargo, North Dakota and Hazel (Mrs. Leo Coughlin) of De Smet who passed away in 1939. It was in 1935 that the family moved back to De Smet from the Spirit Lake Township farm and he operated a dairy for a few years. Mr. and Mrs. McCaskell observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in March, 1955 and she died the following month. He had been residing at the Falconer Home and was in his usual health until a few days before his death which occurred at De Smet Hospital February 4.
