Schmitter Sr., 80, died at about 3 a.m. today, Aug. 16, at University Hospital in Iowa City. Last rites will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Chapel in Batavia, with interment in Batavia Cemetery. Born Oct. 1, 1895 in Schuyler County, Mo., Fred Schmitter was the son of Godfred (sic. Gotfred) and Louisa Yates Schmitter. He lived most of his life in the Batavia community. He married Edith F Snowbarger in 1915. She and one son preceded him in death. He married Edith Lucille Pringle on October 11, 1933 and she also preceded him as did three brothers and two sisters. Surviving are two sons, Boyd and Fred Jr. both of Libertyville; two daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Lee Leyden of Birmingham and Mrs. Sherry Lou Hunter of Arlington, Texas; a step-daughter, Mrs. Mildred Ruth Emmons of Coraon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.
