GRAVES, 54, DIES AFTER AN AUTO COLLISION Lancaster Man Apparently Had Stroke While Driving Fred Walker Graves, 54, a prominent business man of Lancaster, died about 8 o'clock Friday night in the Grim-Smith Hospital, two hours after having been injured in an automobile collision on Highway 63, two miles south of La Plata. Graves, who apparently had sustained a stroke while driving, was on the wrong side of the road, and collided with a 1946 Ford pickup, being driven south by Lowry Painter, 47, of Marceline, who was accompanied by Glen Fox, 43, also of Marceline. Painter was uninjured but Fox suffered a broken nose and bruises on his head. He was treated by Dr. Hudson of La Plata. When Graves was brought to the hospital here, he was bleeding at the mouth but no skin was broken. He could not talk but could understand when a question was asked, and he appeared to have had paralysis of one arm and one leg. The cause of the accident was not determined, according to the State Highway Patrol, but relatives of Graves stated yesterday that he had high blood pressure and they were of the opinion that he suffered a stroke while driving and was unable to keep his car on the right side of the road. Painter seeing the car was coming down the wrong side of the highway, slowed down and pulled to his right as far as he could, but by the time the cars collided, Graves' car was partly off the pavement and on the shoulder. The cars collided head-on but without much speed and as a result were not badly damaged. The grills, radiators, lights and fenders were bent. Graves has been in the insurance business in Lancaster for many years, and was prominent in politics, lodge and church work. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Lancaster, an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, being Worthy Patron, and was Past Patron for several years. He was an active member of the Christian Church and a member of the church board. He has been chairman of the Republican county committee for several years and during World War II was district supervisor of the OPA. He was a son of Samuel and Martha Masters Graves and was born in Schuyler County, Mo., on Nov. 5, 1893. He was married to Eva Hulen, Sept. 19, 1917. No children were born to them. He is survived by his wife, and aged mother, Martha Graves, two sisters, Mrs. Elgie Alexander and Mrs. Grace Roberts, all of Lancaster. Funeral services will be held in the Lancaster Christian Church Monday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. Ben Bradbury, assisted by Rev. Coggins. Masonic Rites will be held at the grave. Interment will be held in Arni Memorial Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Fenton Funeral Home in Lancaster. The pallbearers will be: Bob Neeley, Dewey Turner, Forest Slavin, Harold Burns, Lee Reynolds and Frank Aeschliman. Kirksville Daily Express Kirksville, Missouri November 2, 1947
