Description	:	Freda Headley was born December 29, 1919 on a farm one mile north of Bath, Indiana. She was the last of four children born to Pearl and Ora Bake. She went to the Bath Methodist Church where she was baptized and later joined. Her father died on her eighth birthday. After she graduated from Union High School, she and her mother moved to College Corner when her brother married and began farming the home place. They became members of the College Corner United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and helped with the children’s Sunday School.... Read More	Freda Headley was born December 29, 1919 on a farm one mile north of Bath, Indiana. She was the last of four children born to Pearl and Ora Bake. She went to the Bath Methodist Church where she was baptized and later joined. Her father died on her eighth birthday. After she graduated from Union High School, she and her mother moved to College Corner when her brother married and began farming the home place. They became members of the College Corner United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and helped with the children’s Sunday School. She began working at the telephone exchange as an operator for ten cents an hour and helped her mother serve meals to roomers and boarders. Dr. Mallo, a veterinarian, ate at their boarding house. One day he introduced a young Oxford veterinarian to her. Their first date was on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day. On February 14, 1943, Reverend Boyd married Freda and that young veterinarian, Dr. Ralph Headley in the College Corner Methodist Parsonage. They were happily married for 55 years, working side by side in his practice. She made appointments for farm calls and assisted with surgeries, office hours and caring for dog and cat boarders. Freda has three children, seven granddaughters, three step-grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She cared for her mother and mother-in-law in her home, both of whom lived beyond 100 years of age. After retiring, Freda volunteered at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital. She was active at the Oxford Senior Center singing with the Songbirds, planning the Enrichment Program, Christmas Bazaar and rummage sale and helped on a committee making hundreds of reflective house number signs. A member of the Oxford United Methodist Church since 1976, she sent birthday cards to senior members, lined up hosts for new members, participated in the Good Neighbor program, assembled newsletters, was a member of the Church Growth Committee, helped with bazaars, Food Fair and the rummage sale. Freda learned to cook on the farm, winning first place in the Indiana State Fair with her angel food cake when she was a 4-H member. She raised a vegetable garden and enjoyed canning and freezing food for many years. She continued her love of cooking for friends and family until she left her home in Oxford for her retirement at Westover in Hamilton. Her other hobbies were sewing and playing cards with friends. She traveled most of the United States and made trips to Germany and her favorite vacation destination, the British Isles. In November 2016, Freda moved to Woodland Country Manor. The family wishes to thank Dr. Thomson and the staff at Woodland Country Manor for their compassionate care. Freda was the loving wife of the late Dr. Ralph E. Headley, DVM. Devoted mother to Patricia A. Otto (Virgil), Melvin L. Headley (Marcia) and Beverly J. Giesting (Tim). Loving grandmother to 7 granddaughters and 3 step grandchildren. Survived by 10 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by one great granddaughter and siblings Cecil Bake, Helen Bake Messersmith and Harold Bake. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org or the Forrest Spence Fund at www.forrestspencefund.org. Visitation will be held at 10 am with service at 11 am on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the Ogle and Paul R. Young Funeral Home in Oxford, OH.
