The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Gruetli United Church of Christ, rural Monroe, with Pastor Adam Lassen officiating. Interment with military honors by the American Legion Swanson Post 322 Honor Guard, will be in the parish cemetery. Fred was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Platte County, the eldest son of Hector Jr. and Minnie (Lemp) Blaser. He attended Platte County District 37 Grade School and graduated from Monroe High School in 1943. He worked on the family farm near Monroe until his “Uncle Sam” called him to service toward the end of World War II. Fred and a friend went to report together, thinking they might serve together, but Fred was sent to the Navy and his friend to the Army. He served in the United States Navy from March 5, 1945, until his honorable discharge on July 30, 1946. Fred used his G.I. Bill to study Air-frame & Propulsion in California. He later worked on helicopters and helped maintain choppers for an army survey group in parts of Alaska. That was one of his favorite memories. Fred then started working on rockets and launch vehicles for Rocketdyne & Martin-Marietta. On Feb. 5, 1955, Fred was united in marriage to Donna Roth in California. The couple had three sons – Fred, Bret and Ralph. They eventually settled in Buellton, California. Late in retirement, Fred moved back to Columbus. The goal, “I have come home to die,” he would say. He lived at Prairie Village for some years before achieving that goal. He wished to be “planted” in the Gruetli Cemetery alongside his sons Fred and Bret, and his wife Donna. Fred was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, and a 50 plus year member of the American Legion Swanson Post 322 of Monroe. Fred is survived by his son, Ralph (Teri) Blaser of Lemon Cove, Calif.; brother Ron (Helen) Blaser of Columbus, brother Don Blaser of Honolulu, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Hector Jr. and Minnie Blaser, wife Donna Blaser, sons Frederic and Bret Blaser, brother Harold Blaser and sister Shirley Erdman.
