Smith GREENFIELD -- Frederick A. Smith, 90, of 203 Silver St., died Friday (11-28-03) in Poet's Seat Nursing Home. He was born in Heath on Sept. 26, 1913, the son of K. Paul and Edith (Gilbert) Smith. He attended local schools and graduated from the former Charlemont High School in 1931. Upon graduation, he worked as a carpenter for the Clark Brothers, a well-known contractor in west county at that time. He joined the Army Air Force on Aug. 11, 1942. He was a radio man and served in India and France. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1945, having attained the rank of sergeant. Smith was then employed at the former Kendall Mill in Colrain for 28 years, retiring in 1975. Prior to living in Greenfield, he lived in Heath for most of his life. He was a member of the Heath Grange for many years. Smith was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Shelburne Falls and then Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenfield. He married the former Margaret Clark in 1946. She died in 1988. Survivors include his second wife of 12 years, the former Ruth Cromack; two sons, Stanley of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., and Stephen of Garland, Texas; two stepsons, Joseph Smith of Cushing, Maine, and Robert Smith of Walingford, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Marilyn Harris of Kensington, Conn., and Peggy Keppel of Leyden; four brothers, Louis of Heath, Floyd of Berlin, N.Y., Daniel of Chesterville, Maine, and Donald of North Sebring, Fla.; two sisters, Vivian Hazlett of Guilford, Maine, and Lucy Burnett of Sun City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Brian, Eric, Sheryl and William; eight step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. The Rev. Timothy Campoli, pastor, will officiate. The family will not meet at the funeral home the morning of the mass. They invite all to join at the church. Burial will follow in West Branch Cemetery in Colrain. Calling hours will be this evening from 7 to 9 at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant House, Foundation for Homeless Children, 346 West 17th St., New York, N.Y. 10011-5002 or to the Special Olympics, 1325 G St., NW, Suite 770, Washington D.C. 20005-3104.
