(Cromack) Smith, 95, formerly of Silver Street, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Poet's Seat Health Care Center. Ruth was born in Shelburne on Sept. 29, 1914, the 11th child of John B. and Mary (Graves) Cromack. She was a graduate of Arms Academy, Class of 1931, and a graduate of Worcester State Teachers College in 1936. In 1970, Ruth received a master's degree from Tufts University and in 1972 studied at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. Ruth taught all levels of high school Latin as well as Classical Literature at Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield from 1965 to 1981. She was a group leader for many student trips to such places as Spain, Poland, Germany, the Roman Provinces, and throughout Europe. She also traveled on her own through the Orient, the Middle East, and was a representative of the United States in the "Bridges for Peace" event in Russia. Ruth also hosted the representatives from Russia when they came to the U.S. Ruth was a longtime member of the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield, serving with the Women's Association and as a member of the choir for many years. She was also a member of the Classical Association of New England and the Virgilian Society, where she received credits toward her master's degree by leading student travels abroad. Survivors include a son, two daughters, two stepsons, a sister, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her first husband, Robert E. Smith in 1980, her second husband Frederick Smith in 2003, and her son, Robert E. Smith in 2005. A funeral service will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church, 16 Court Square. The Rev. Armand Proulx, pastor, will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church hall. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. at North Heath Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield. Ruth's family wants to acknowledge the staff at Poet's Seat Health Care Center for their wonderful, loving care for Ruth throughout her time with them. Ruth felt as though she was being cared for by an extended caring family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to either the Second Congregational Church, 16 Court Square or Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Suite 2, both in Greenfield, MA 01301.
