Fred was one of the first to homestead south of Morristown and a resident of Corson County for 48 years. Mr. Winter died without warning on Main Avenue last Wednesday noon as he was walking home for lunch. Funeral services were held at the Evanson Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Paul G. Dahms, assistant pastor of the St. Mary's Catholis church officiated. Todd Oleson sang, Mrs. George G. Papke was the accompanist. Six nephews were pall bearers. They were Douglas Winter, Earl Ring, Marcus Burke, John, Vincent and Paul O'Donnell. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon. Death came as a shock, Mr. Winter had been troubled with a heart afflictin for several months. He had spent short periods in hospitals here and in Seattle, Washington during the fall and early winter months. Physicians had followed his progress toward recovery with satisfaction and only the day before his death had been pronounced his condition as "much improved." Born in Wisconsin, Frederick Franz David Winter was born at Cecil, Shawano, Wisconsin on April 28, 1886 to David Frederick and Caroline (Winter) Winter. He was educated at Cecil and attended the Wisconsin School of Business at Appleton, Wisconsin. After his graduation, he worked in the law office of his brother Paul at Shawano, Wisconsin as a court reporter. He homesteaded near Morristown. When Corson County opened up to homesteaders, Mr. Winter came to western South Dakota. He settled a claim 9 1/2 miles south of Morristown in 1910. For a time he worked as a locator for the Morrisrown Land Company and assisted new settlers in finding homesteads over a wide area. Mr. Winter was married in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Myrtle Mary Davis on October 21, 1912. They returned to Morristown to establish their home on the claim. He was prominent in the county, as a farmer, he played a prominent part in the development of his home community through the early years and later by association with federal farm programs served on a countywide basis. Mr. Winter was identified with the AAA and ASC programs from their institution until 1950. He moved to McIntosh from the farm south if Morristown in 1939 and for a number of years directed the program in the county. In 1949 he worked for Corson County taking tax titles. He held County Offices, in 1950, he was elected register of deeds of Corson County, serving for two years. In 1954, he was elected county treasurer serving until January 1, 1957. Following his retirement, he and Mrs. Winter purchased a home at 210 Second Avenue in Lemmon. They moved there the last of August. Survivors include his widow, three sons, Daniel and Phillip of Morristown and Frederick William of Lemmon; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Jenson of Morristown and Mrs. Sheldon Peters of Seattle, Washington. 11 grandchildren, David, Anita, Cindy, Denise, Douglas, Deborah Winter, Richard and Beverly Jenson all of Morristown. Kevin and Byron Winter of Lemmon and Kurt Merkel of Seattle, Washington. Two brothers, David and Paul Winter of Shawano, Wisconsin, three sisters, Mrs. Alvinia Smith, Hillsboro, North Dakota and Mrs. Mae Volz and Mrs. E. J. Reinhammer of Cecil, Wisconsin, and 43 nieces and nephews. Relatives coming from a distances for the funeral included Mrs. Peters and son Kurt of Seattle, Wa.David Winter and son Douglas of Shawano, Wis., Mrs. Volz of Cecil, Wis., Mrs. Smith of Hillsboro, N. D., Mrs. Jack Henning Hillsboro and Margaret Henning of Bowman, nieces and August Heller of Cecil, Wis, a brother in law; Mr. and Mrs. John Casey of Madison, S.D., brother in law and sister of Mrs. Winter.
