Mauzy now reposes in the beautiful hill-side cemetery at Union Chapel in the Bluegrass Valley where he was born and reared to young manhood. The remains were brought to the sorrowing home at New Hampden, Saturday afternoon, accompanied by delegations from West Virginia fraternal organizations of which he was a member, and by a few special friends and relatives. The hour for the funeral services was ll o'clock, and long before the time had arrived, the home and the village were thronged with people, while hundreds had gathered at Central M.E. Church South, there the funeral services were to be held. Highland Lodge,No. 110, A.F.& A.M., of which he was a member, convened at the Presbyterian church, New Hampden, many visiting brethren from West Va., as well as other counties in Virginia, being present, and, at ll o'clock, the procession moved to Central Church, the following brothers acitng as pall-bearers: George Sharp, R.B. Viehderfer, G.R. Goodsell, L.H. Harris, W.F. Jones, J.C Matheny, J. Ed. Arbogast, and A.J. Jones. Rev. T. Cooper, pastor of the Crabbottom circuit, conducted the service, being assisted by Rev. Potter, of Monterey, and Rev. I.Q. Burr, of Durbin. The former, in a brief talk, referred in complimentary terms to the deceased; as high moral character, his devotion to parents and sisters, and impressed upon the large audience the character of the warning which the sad circumstances afforded. The music was most appropriate and well rendered. The floral tribute was profuse and beautiful, the casket being literally buried beneath the offering. The service was then turned over to the Masonic brethren, to be con- concluded at the grave. Union Chapel, the family burying-place is situated several miles further up the valley, and here were found several hundred people awaiting the arrival of the body. The open grave was surrounded by members of his home lodge and many visiting brethren from other sections, and, as if in sympathy with the sad occasion, a threatening storm was not only withheld until the impressive burial ceremony could be used, but at its close, the angry storm-clouds separated and gave place to a gentle, summer shower, suggestive of god's goodness and mercy. THE FATAL ACCIDENT Most of our readers are familiar with the details of the fearful tragedy which occurred at Durbin, W.Va., about 8 o'clock last Thursday evening. Mr. Mauzy and Mr. J.W. Goodsall, who were joint owners of a new automobile, left Durbin for a short drive, coming east over the Staunton and Parkersburg 'pike, Mr. Mauzy, for the first time, had asked permission to drive the machine, and they were moving at slow speed. When a few hundred yards this side of the village, where the road had been moved high up on the mountain spur to make room for the railroad, Mr. Mauzy turned the steering wheel, it is thought with the intention of passing around a muddy place in the road, but turned it in the wrong direction. His companion experienced in handling the machine, saw the danger and called to Mr. Mauzy to reverse. He quickly turned the wheel, but again in the wrong direction, and the circumstances bear out the theory that the peril of the situation caused him to completely lose his nerve and presence of mind. For something like 100 feet there is a steep incline to the edge of the cut above the railroad, which is almost perpendicular for perhaps 30 feet. Just as the machine left the road-bed, Mr. Goodsell caught the guide-wheel and attempted to reverse it, but it was held with a grasp so firm that he could not rest it, so he jumped and called to Mr. Mauzy to do the same. For some reason, he was unable to do so, was carried down the steep embankment, over the precipice to the railroad track below, and instantly killed. His warm friend and more fortunate companion hurried to his side, called his name in vain, and, finding him dead, gave the alarm, and his body was carried to the village from which they had started a few minutes before. HIS CAREER F. Glenn Mauzy was cut down in the prime of life. He was born about 35 years ago in the village of New Hampden, this county, being the oldest child and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Mauzy, who survive him, as do also three sisters, Mrs. Uriah Hevener, Misses Mollie and Pattie Mauzy. When quite a young man, he came to Monterey, and while the average village does not offer many "open fields" he found employment and gave proof of capacity, zeal and industry. In fact, it was early in life that he developed the qualities which seemed to fit him for positions of honor and responsibility. From a place in the post office at Monterey, he was called to conduct the mercantile business of G.W. Hevener & Co. at Hightown. A few years later, upon the organization of the Bank of Highland he was made assistant cashier, which position he held until elected cashier of the Bank of Durbin, in which capacity he served until his untimely death. It goes without saying that the character of these positions was such as to bring him in daily contact with many people and in fact that in all of these varied and various business relations with men he made friends of all and enemies of none, speaks more on his behalf than can be expressed in words. Into the cold, calculating, exacting methods of business affairs, he carried a consideration, a bearing, an evidence of honor and sympathy which mellowed their harshness and robbed them of a measure of unpleasantness. In addition to this he possessed social qualities which commended him to all acquaintances, and, whether in business relations or mingling with the world in a social way, his bearing was such as to awaken the tenderest friendship of which mankind is capable. So naturally did he, win his way to the hearts of his fellows and ingratiate himself into favor, that the relation seemed to call for a stronger, more endearing term than that of friendship, an example of which is found in a statement made by a well-known traveling man, who came many miles to attend the funeral: "If there was a man in the two states who knew Glenn and did not love him, I have never met him." His devotion to parents and sisters was the crowning virtue of his noble manhood, and was the admiration of all who knew him in life. Highland county has never sent out into the business world a son of whom she had greater cause to be proud, and his death is a grief common to us all. Among the large number in attendance upon the funeral perhaps 2,000 persons in all-we mention some of those from a distance: E.M. and A.W. Arbogast, D.L. Pingley, Capt. S.B. Phillips, J.M. Harmon, E.M. Ervine, T.M. McCorkle, E.P. Ervin, J.M. Harmon, Jacob Hevener and family, M.K. Mauzy, and many others whose names we could not learn. Mr. Mauzy, in addition to being a member of Highland Lodge, No, 110, A.F. & A.M. was also a K. of P. and a member of the Elkins Lodge of Elks. Goodsall, seconded by T.L. Burner, it was ordered that the following resolutions be spread upon the records of this bank: Resolved, that in the death of F.G. Mauzy, The Bank of Durbin has lost an efficient officer, one who was ever faithful to the trust imposed upon him, and whose place will be hard to fill, as he took charge of this bank at its organization as its cashier, and continued in that position until his untimely death on the 24th inst ...
