Description	:	Frederick James Softley was born in England, September 13, 1858, the eldest child of James and Sarah Griggs Softley. while still a child the family moved to Walton, England, where he grew to manhood. In 1883 the parents, five sons and one daughter came to the United States, settling first at Allegan, Mich. In 1885 they came to Nebraska, settling on a farm northwest of Fremont. September 10, 1890, Mr. Softley married Miss Jennie M. Ferguson of Webster, Neb., and a home was established southwest of Hooper. To them were born six sons and two... Read More	Frederick James Softley was born in England, September 13, 1858, the eldest child of James and Sarah Griggs Softley. while still a child the family moved to Walton, England, where he grew to manhood. In 1883 the parents, five sons and one daughter came to the United States, settling first at Allegan, Mich. In 1885 they came to Nebraska, settling on a farm northwest of Fremont. September 10, 1890, Mr. Softley married Miss Jennie M. Ferguson of Webster, Neb., and a home was established southwest of Hooper. To them were born six sons and two daughters, Mrs. Ethel M. Fisher of Beaver Crossing, Neb. Earl Softley of North Bend, Bruce J. of Fremont, Ernest F. of Fairmont, Ray D. of Randolph, Lloyd A., Alan G. and Alice E. of Grafton, all of whom were present at the funeral. In 1904 the family moved to Grafton, near which place he had lived since. Soon after taking up residence in Fillmore County, he became a member of the Grafton Congregational Church. In a short time he was elected a deacon, which office he held until failing health did not permit regular church attendance. he also served as county commissioner for a number of years. Of recent years his health was not of the best, but not until the last few weeks had he been really ill. He was gathered to his eternal reward, March 14, 1940, aged 81 years, 6 months and 1 day. Left to mourn the departure of a kind, loving husband and father, are the wife, eight children eight grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Rosa S. Gunkel of Maryhill, Wash.; a brother, Alfred Softley of Fremont, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church in Grafton Saturday afternoon, March 16, with the six sons acting as pallbearers. Rev. J. H. Kraemer of Plainview, a former Grafton pastor, officiated. Interment was in Grafton Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal March 1940 Father.
