Potter, 61, a veteran employe of John Morrell & Co., was killed instantly at 9:15 p.m. Saturday while en route to Chariton to visit relatives. The car in which Potter was riding, drive by his son-in-law Luther Garman, struck an icy stretch of road seven miles east of Chariton on highway 34, went off the road and crashed into a telephone pole. The pole and a part of the fence were knocked down and the car was badly damaged. Mrs. Garman, Potter's daughter who was also a passenger in the car, was brought to the Ottumwa hospital where the extend of her injuries is not yet known. However, hospital officials said they thought she was not in serious condition. Potter was born Aug. 21, 1892, in Ottumwa, and had lived here all his life. He was married March 19, 1917 to Mary Luke, who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Garman of Ottumwa and Mrs. Hazel Overturf of Racine, Wis., six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three brothers, Roy, Ike and Gabe Potter all of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Potter was a member of the W.O.W. He had been employed at the Morrell plant for the past 31 years, and had been working for some time as a steamfitter. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. L.C. Card, pastor of the First Church of the Open Bible. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Fellows employes at the Morrell plant will serve as pallbearers.
