Fred "Freddie" Warner was born on Sept. 14, 1923, in Harman, W.Va., to Fred and Retta Warner, and he died at home on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the age of 82. He attended elementary school in Cresaptown, and Allegany High School in Cumberland. He graduated from Catherman's Business Academy. He was called to Army service during World War II. He served in North Africa with the Military Police, transporting prisoners of war to the United States. During his tour, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean six times.... Fred "Freddie" Warner was born on Sept. 14, 1923, in Harman, W.Va., to Fred and Retta Warner, and he died at home on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the age of 82. He attended elementary school in Cresaptown, and Allegany High School in Cumberland. He graduated from Catherman's Business Academy. He was called to Army service during World War II. He served in North Africa with the Military Police, transporting prisoners of war to the United States. During his tour, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean six times. He served as a rifleman in Europe with the 9th Armored Division under the command of General Patton. He also served in the 1st Infantry Division in Europe. During this time, he studied language and Middle European history at the Military School in Ansbach, Germany. In 1950, during the Korean Conflict, he served with the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. He was an honorary member of the famed Co. L. 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, World War II. Fred was proud of his 10 years in the military and thought it an honor and a privilege to serve his country that he loved so well. Upon returning home from his military service, he married Marian Skelley. They took over the family business started by his father and mother in 1928. This was a country restaurant specializing in German cuisine with homemade breads and pastries. The business has been successful for 80 years. Among his accomplishments are his induction in 1991 into Maryland's Boxing Hall of Fame, the Prestigious Ring 101, in Baltimore. He was First Adjutant of the James Millar American Legion Post in Cresaptown. He was also a self-taught guitar player, singer and writer of patriotic and country songs, one of which, "What Would This Wide World Do Without America," was favorably received by folks in Nashville and throughout the world. He and his wife are honorary members of the "Manner Gesang Verein," a men's singing choir in the town of Viersen, Germany, established in 1850. He attended and supported the First United Methodist Church for the 40 years he has been a resident of Sarasota. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marian; daughter, Judy Lynn Witt; grandson, Jacy Witt and his wife Liz; grandson, Logan Argil Witt; great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Becca and Lindsey, all of Sarasota; one sister, Josephine Owens of Cumberland; nephews, Col. Terry Broadwater of Moneta, Va., Tim Martin of Cumberland, Dr. Stephen Owens of Cumberland, Michael Owens of Cumberland, and Ranger Col. Jeffery Broadwater of Fort Stewart, Ga.; and one niece, Rita Marie Marks of Cumberland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Retta Warner; brothers, Hansel Warner and Sgt. Argil Warner; and sisters, Olive, Ruth and Rita. Burial with military honors will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Cumberland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church at 104 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota, FL 34236.
