Read More	—— Josephine Owens September 27, 1916 - April 14, 2016 Josephine Warner Owens, 99, of Cumberland, died Thursday April 14, 2016, at her home, surrounded by family. Josephine was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Riverton, W.Va. Her parents were Fred and Retta Warner. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Clifton C. Owens; three sisters, Olive Warner, Rita Broadwater, and Ruth Martin; and three brothers, Hansel, Argil, and Fred Warner Jr. Her childhood was spent at the Grist Mill, owned by her father just outside Harmon, W.Va. It stands today as a historic structure called "The Old Mill." Her family moved to Cresaptown, in 1928, and her father and mother built and operated a grocery store/gas station known as Warner's Café, where she worked during her teen years. She attended Greene Street Junior High School; during the time, it garnered a certain fame, it caught fire and burned to the ground even though located next door to a Cumberland fire station. She and her fellow students were transferred to Allegany High School, where she graduated in 1934. Her future husband, Clifton, lived across the road from the café and they both took jobs at the Celanese plant. They eloped in 1936 in Berryville, Va., but told no one of this for three years, as the Celanese plant had a policy preventing married couples from simultaneous employment. From 1956 until the present, Josephine was the co-owner and manager of The Woodsedge Mobile Home Court. She excelled as a cook and baker for many years, providing the bread served at Warner's German Restaurant and running the kitchen for the Saint Ambrose Harvest Bazaars. Josephine was a lifelong member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church and was awarded the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor for her service there. She is survived by her eldest son, Stephen Owens and his wife, Amy, of Cumberland, and son, Michael Owens and his wife, Brenda, of Wiley Ford, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Anne Booher and her husband, Caleb, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Lucas Owens and Caitlin Owens of New York City, and Dylan Owens of Denver; great-granddaughter, Annabelle Booher; nephew, Terry Broadwater and wife, Deborah; and two nieces, Judy Witt of Statesville, N.C., and Rita Marie Marks of Cumberland.
