Description	:	UPLAND -- Frederick Roy Walz Sr., 69, 537 S. Main St., died Thursday at his home, surrounded by his family after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Upland to the late Ferdinand and Kathryn (Stephens) Walz. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. He served in the Air Force from 1953-1957. He was a staff sergeant and an air pilot mechanic. He married Carol Marsh on Oct. 22, 1954, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. She survives. Main St., died Thursday at his home, surrounded by his family after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Upland to the late Ferdinand and Kathryn (Stephens) Walz. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. He served in the Air Force from 1953-1957. He was a staff sergeant and an air pilot mechanic. He married Carol Marsh on Oct. 22, 1954, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. She survives. Mr. Walz worked as a hylift driver at the Marion General Motors plant from 1957-1995. He was a member of the former Upland Civil Defense, Arcana Masonic Lodge 427, Grant County Area Board of Zoning Appeals, a former president and coach of the Jefferson Baseball League for five years, a member of American Legion Post 138 and Upland Historical Society. He also was active in the United Auto Workers' Care and Share program. He enjoyed his special friends in and around Upland, and he had special friends in Canada. He also enjoyed his yard work, yard sales and family. He enjoyed racing and went to the Indianapolis 500 for more than 30 years. He enjoyed his friends at the Gas City racetrack, his morning breakfasts at Jackie's in Gas City with his grandson, Michael, and his friends. He attended the UAW retirees dinner monthly. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his wife, surviving are daughter, Joan Stanley, Marion; son, Frederick Roy "Fritz" Walz Jr., Upland; brother, Don (Mary) Walz, Upland; grandchildren, Brad Downam, Jonesboro, Brandon (Annie) Downam, Converse, Micheal Downam and Kara Howard, both of Upland, and Katy and Kristen Walz, Selma; stepgrandson, Brandon (Bethany) Stanley, Elkhart; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Jillian and Liberty; special goddaughter, Sally (Alan) Petty, Upland; sister-in-law, Sondra (Lenard) Berryhill, Marion; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna S. Howard, on Oct. 31, 1999; and brother, Jack Walz. Services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Jones-Smith Funeral Home, 215 S. Main St., with the Revs. Ernest Laughner and Marcus Combs officiating. Burial is in Jefferson Cemetery, with military rites by the Grant County Honor Guard. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic memorial services at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Fairmount Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O.
