"Minnie" Halling on August 6, 1875, in Atchison, Kansas. They had nine children. The first three children are Mary B. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas. Published in 1883, Barton County, Part 6, Ellinwood. MANGELSDORF BROTHERS, dealers in general merchandise, opened trade in 1877 at Ellinwood. They erected their present brick store in 1881, size of which is 25x90 feet, two stories high, at a cost of $5,500. They carry an average stock of $8,000 to $10,000, and employ four men. William and August Mangelsdorf are the firm. William first came to Atchison, Kansas, 1864, and engaged in grocery business, which he continued there until coming to Ellinwood. Born in Germany, February 20, 1846. Came to America in 1857. Married, 1876, to Miss Minnie Halling, a native of Pennsylvania. They have one daughter-Clara A. He enlisted, 1861, Company E, Fourth Missouri Volunteer Infantry. Was mustered out in 1863. He is a member of S.A. Hurlburt Post No. 48, G.A.R. ----------------------------------------------------------- WILLIAM MANGELSDORF DEAD (The Atchison Daily Globe May 16, 1911.) William Mangelsdorf Sr., age 65 years, died at his home, Eleventh and Santa Fe, at 6 o'clock yesterday evening of a complication of diseases. The funeral will be held from the German Evangelical church, corner of Ninth and Santa Fe streets, at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial in Mt. Vernon cemetery. William Mangelsdorf was born in Arnim, Germany. He came to America in 1856, located in Hermann, Mo. where he lived until 1864, when he came to Atchison. Like many Germans who came to this country, Mr. Mangelsdorf's chief assets were sterling honesty and plenty of industry. He soon saved enough to go into the grocery business, and was a partner of the late John Raterman, Sr. In 1878 he went to Ellinwood, and opened a gerneral merchandise store, and personally managed it until he returned to Atchison seven years ago. He was one of the incorporators of the Mangelsdorf Bros. Seed Co, and was its treasurer until last July. His good judgment was demonstrated in every line of business he became interested in, for he always prospered. He possessed the qualities of any man who succeeds: politeness, industry, honesty and fairness. He is survived by six children: Clara, Edward, Minnie, Frank and Albert who are at home, and William of Ellinwood. In addition the following brothers and sisters survive him: August Mangelsdorf Sr., Mrs. Anna Buhman, and Mrs. John Lamers, of Atchison; Henry Mangelsdorf of Clayton, N.M.; Mrs. Dora Beurman, of Lawrence; Fred Stehwien, of Bushton; and Albert Stehwien, of Lawrence. The last two are half brothers. Six nephews will act as pall-bearers.
