Anna is thought to be buried at the Schreyer homestead with no markers for actual grave, but a roadside marker erected near the grave at a much later date. Many of their children are actually buried at Kingsbury. Frederick and brother John were born in Mitwitz, in old Bavaria. Fred and wife Anna and 4yr old son Arthur came from Germany and arrived in New York Nov. 23 1861. During the trip to America, the ship was blown off course during a storm and they feared for their lives. They went by rail from New York to Hillsboro WI. John followed in 1863. Frederick ran the general store and post office. They stayed in Wisconsin while Anna's brothers fought during Civil War, then moved to Ohio to care for her sister in law. He served in the Civil War as a private, Co E 189 Ohio Inf, received a pension. He was active in the Custer Co GAR society for Civil War veterans. After Civil War, moved to Atkinsonville, IN in Jan. 1866, then to Brazil IN, in 1868 he was commisioned Postmaster, lived there until Sept 1875. The Panic following the war caused hard times and they went broke. They moved to Triumph in Sept 1875, were the first homesteaders between Arnold and Callaway on the Loup River, NE. Frederick entered his first homestead claim on Oct. 22, 1878, along with Alfred. Operated a grocery store in his home and established the Triumph Post Office in 1877. Also built a small dam across the outlet of a spring for the first known irrigation system in the valley. Fred was always fighting with cowboys over land use- got into shootout and was wounded. Built dugout and sod house. The name of the town, Triumph, comes from Frederick's shootout with the cowboys. It is said to mean either 1) his triumph over the cowboys, or 2) his triumph over death when wounded. (Above dates from letter written by Frederick to pension office). A picture of him and his house can be found in Solomon Butcher's photo collection online. Frederick was described as eccentric, a resolute German, and hot-headed. His property included a natural ford that everyone used to cross the river, he tried to stop them and this caused problems, including another shooting in which Frederick and son Alfred were jailed.
