Civil War Veteran, notes in our family say he was with Sherman on his march to the sea but checking historical notes on the internet show he was in Brownville, Texas a few days after the time Sherman's march began December 2, 1864. Following from Obituary New Ulm REVIEW of 29 Nov. 1922: "Fred Schwede died at the St. Alexander Home for the Aged on Friday, November 17, 1922 at 4:50 in the afternoon. Mr. Schwede had been ailing with asthma for several years past, but was confined to his bed only three days prior to his demise." "The deceased was born in Farbien, Pommerania on May 14, 1834. He came to America at the age of 24, and settled at Milwaukee, WI. He was married there fifty - five years ago to Miss Augusta Bartz. Thirty - six years ago the couple removed to a farm in Burnstown township and eight years later moved on to a farm at Fairmont. After living there five years, they came to New Ulm and have resided here since. Mrs. Schwede preceded her husband in death six years ago." "Twelve children were born to them, all of whom are living. They are: Fred Schwede of Aurelia, ND.; William of Foley, MN.; Mrs. Julius Gerth of Clarissa; Herman, August, Edward, and Louis, Mrs. Valentine Bott and Mrs. George Klein, all of Donnybrook, ND.; Mrs. Augusta Werner of Menomonee Falls, WI.; Mrs. William Wellhausen of Medina, ND.; and Mrs. Christ Folster of Mankato, MN. One brother August Schwede of Kenosha, WI. also survives." "The burial services were conducted from Forster's undertaking parlor Sunday afternoon. Rev. E.H. Sans officiated and the remains were shipped to Donnybrook, ND. where interment was made on the family lot."
