Fred Dan Abbas (21 Iowa, born 17 June 1897), from Kanawha, Iowa, signed up for his World War I Draft Registration Card on 5 June 1918 at Garner, Hancock County, Iowa. He was described as being tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and light hair. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he returned to Kanawha and engaged in farming. On 14 January 1925 he was united in marriage to Grace Folkerts in Kanawha. The young couple made their home for three years, from 1925 to 1928, on the Lone Tree farm and from 1928 until 1934 on a farm five miles south and two and a half miles west of Kanawha. Two children were born to Fred and Grace: Donald Eugene Abbas and Audrey Mae Abbas. The family were members of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. Fred Abbas (33 Iowa) is found in the 1930 United States Federal Census for Norway Township, Wright County, Iowa along with his wife, Grace (25 Iowa) and children, Donald (4 Iowa) and Audrey M (11/12 Iowa). Ben Seebeck (17 Iowa) was lodging with them. Fred was a farmer. On Sunday morning, 28 October 1934, while on their way to church, Grace was fatally injured in an auto accident which occurred at the 4-corners bridge five miles south and two miles west of Kanawha. Fred Abbas and the two children, Donald and Audrey, received minor injuries as did the other driver. Four years later, on 17 January 1939, Fred Abbas married Maude Verbrugge in the Kanawha Christian Reformed parsonage. She was born 7 June 1908 in the Netherlands the daughter of Frank and Martha Verbrugge. Maude came with her parents to the United States in 1910 and the family settled in Wright County, Iowa. She received her education in the rural schools of Wright County. She was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and the Church Ladies Aid. To Fred and Maude Abbas were born two children: Jerry Lee and Dennis Frederick. The family farmed west of Kanawha until 1963, when they retired and moved to town. Maude (Verbrugge) Abbas passed away at her home, 504 North Main, in Kanawha late Tuesday evening, 3 September 1974 following a lingering illness. Fred was a lifelong member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and served as a member of the council several times over the years. In 1986 he went to live in the Kanawha Community Home. Fredrick Dan Abbas passed away Sunday, 28 February 1988 at the Home. He was 91 years old. He is buried beside his two wives in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha, Hancock County, Iowa.
