On 14 January 1925, Grace Folkerts was united in marriage to Fred Abbas in Kanawha Hancock County, Iowa. The young couple made their home for three years, from 1925 to 1928, on the Lone Tree farm and from 1928 until 1934 on a farm five miles south and two and a half miles west of Kanawha. Two children were born to Fred and Grace: Donald Eugene Abbas and Audrey Mae Abbas. The family were members of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. On 14 March 1926, Grace made a public confession of her faith in the Lord Jesus. On Sunday morning, 28 October 1934, while on their way to church, Grace was fatally injured in an auto accident which occurred at the 4-corners bridge five miles south and two miles west of Kanawha. The other driver who was delivering the Sunday Des Moines Registers to rural patrons was driving his car north. Fred and Grace along with their two children were coming from their home a short distance west of the corner. The cars collided on the bridge and the Abbas car was hurled through the bridge railing and into a dredge ditch where it landed upside down. Grace was thrown from the car by the impact. Suffering from a broken arm, skull fracture and internal injuries, she was taken to Dr. Steele hospital in Belmond following a preliminary examination by a physician at Kanawha. She died the same evening at 9:20 p.m without regaining consciousness. Fred and the two children, Donald and Audrey, received minor injuries as did the other driver. The crash was so resounding that it was heard by those seated in the Wright Christian Reformed Church some distance away. Fred Reitema, one of the churchgoers, took the injured persons to Kanawha. It was later determined that the other driver was drunk. Grace was a devoted and loving wife and mother. "News of her death brought sorrow into the hearts of her many friends in this community. The bereaved family will always treasure as a sacred memory the thought, that when the accident occurred she was anticipating the blessings of the services in the midst of God's congregation here on earth. Ere the Sabbath Day had ended the Lord had translated her to the glory of his triumphant church in heaven." Two Kanawha residents were fatally injured Sunday, one while riding in an automobile and another while fishing. Mrs. Fred Abbas died Sunday evening in a Belmond hospital after she and four others were injured. Lawrence Kinseth was hurt while fishing near Bode. His body was found in the water and it was first believed he had been drowned. [Note: Further reference to Lawrence Kinseth have been deleted from this article] The accident in which Mrs. Abbas, 30, was fatally injured occurred Sunday morning. Her husband and two children also received minor injuries when the car driven by her husband collided with the car driven by Everett Wicks, 5 miles south and 2 miles west of Kanawha. The car driven by Abbas hurtled through a bridge railing and went into a dredge ditch when the automobiles met, and Mrs. Abbas was thrown from the car by the impact. Never Regained Consciousness Mrs. Abbas failed to regain consciousness, suffering from a broken arm, skull fracture and internal injuries. She was taken to a Belmond hospital following a preliminary examination by a physician at Kanawha. Wick received minor injuries. Mr. Abbas and the two children were badly bruised, but the injuries were not of a serious nature, according to physicians. Cars Are Demolished. Both cars were demolished. It was not known what caused the collision but the crash was so resounding that it was heard by persons seated in the Wright Christian church, some distance away. Fred Reitema, one of the churchgoers, took the injured persons to Kanawha. The Abbas family was on the way to church when the accident occurred. Surviving Mrs. Abbas are her husband and two children, Donald, 8, and Audrey, 5; her mother, Mrs. A. Faulkerts of Kanawha, two brothers and three sisters.
