He was born Nov. 15, 1913 to Carl and Edith Mills Patton at Kensington, KS, where he lived at least eight (8) years. The first big trip Fred made was to Seibert, CO. when the family moved there by train. The family moved again to Burlington, CO before they settled in Goodland, KS, where he grew to manhood. On Dec. 4, 1937 Fred married Myrtle Lorene Gropp in Coolidge, KS. Fred and Lorene lived in several towns in Kansas with Scott City and Tribune being the last two. To this union were born two sons, Carl Otto and Clyde Alfred and a daughter, Nina Jeanne Stinnett. Death broke this happy union on Jan. 10, 1961 which was a great sorrow to Fred. Several years later Fred contacted his childhood sweetheart, Maxine Jackson. By this time her husband had passed away and she was pleased to see Fred again. They were married April 18, 1966. In 1967 they moved to Saticoy, CA where they worked on a bird ranch raising parakeets. Although they thoroughly enjoyed their work, they did not like California. This was a very happy union and they enjoyed several years of much happiness. In March 1985, Maxine died in Philipsburg and Fred was left alone again. Shortly after this Fred began to attend and later joined the Kirwin Nazarene Church. While attending there he met a widow, Faye Stroup. On February 14, 1988, he made her his valentine there at the church. Faye was a comfort to Fred and helped ease his feelings of loneliness. When Faye had a serious heart attack and her general health began to decline it became necessary to move her into the Evergreen Health Center. Fred decided after a short time to move into the care center so he could be with Faye. While at the Retirement Center Fred was President of the residents' council. He took the responsibility seriously. Every morning he made the announcements for the day and also gave a thought for the day. This avenue of service brought him much enjoyment. Fred was preceded in death by both of his parents, two wives and two brothers, Frank and Wallace Patton, as well as a sister, Margaret Vaught, Chicago. Fred is survived by his wife, Faye, of the Phillips County Retirement Center, his children: Carl Otto of McPherson, KS; Nina Jeanne Stinnett of Phoenix, AZ; and Clyde Alfred of Scott City, KS; Faye's ten children; four grandchildren: Carla Patton, Wichita, KS; Naomi Kruse, New Braunfels, TX; Danny & Joanna Stinnett, Phoenix, AZ; and several step grand children. Fred or "Pat" as he was often called, leaves two brothers, Willis of Topeka, Raymond of Hutchinson; four sisters: Mildred Watkins, St. Francis, KS; Ruby Harbor, Napoleon, OH; Iris Orender, Girard, KS; Inez DePlata, Goodland, KS; one uncle, J.V. Patton, Phillipsburg; two aunts: Delna Blessing, Clarinda, IA and Ruth Grossman, McKinleyville, CA; cousins, and several nieces and nephews. A sense of humor which rarely failed him, the many poems he wrote with inspiration and would quote for you when asked, a deep love and appreciation for music, and a genuine interest in people are just a few things for which Fred will be remembered by his friends and loved ones.
