Description	:	Fredrick Andersson Brodine was the fifth child to Anders and Ann. Fredrick learned the forestry and carpentry trade like the rest of his older brothers. At the age of twelve he and his oldest brother Andrew were the first of the Andersson family to emigrate to America to make a new life for themselves in the west. Read More	Fredrick Andersson Brodine was the fifth child to Anders and Ann. Fredrick learned the forestry and carpentry trade like the rest of his older brothers. At the age of twelve he and his oldest brother Andrew were the first of the Andersson family to emigrate to America to make a new life for themselves in the west. With Andrew as his guide and mentor he would become a self sufficient American. His mother died when he was 11. in a way he was forced to learn to rely on his abilities and intuition before arriving in Bishop Hill. On Bishops Hill is where he developed and spent four years of his youth. Here he learned English and learned the ways of youth and men. With such training he was prepared for the life of a cowboy in the west. He married August Viola Bailey in 1883 in Nebraska. The had 5 children. Earl William, George Ervine,Fredrick Valentine, Ralph Leslie (died as a infant) and Albert Andrew. Fredrik would have lived a long life but for an unfortunate accident in the course of his daily activities. He had gone to the hayfield, loaded a large load on his hayrack. Bringing it back to the home-site, the trail led up a steep slope. The rack leaned to the right, the load was top-heavy. As it began to tip over, Fredrik jumped from the top of the load up hill to avoid the falling load. His foot slipped, his momentum did not carry him beyond the rising front wheel hub. He fell on it on his back. His kidney was injured. Some days later he succumbed to his injuries. He died at the age of 44 on May 3, 1908. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, just about a mile from his dream farm. Though his life ended prematurely he was surely a beacon to many who saw his rise from the ashes as it were, developing a prosperous, well improved one hundred sixty acres. He died young without debt. A rare accomplishment in any age, but especially so for this boy immigrant from the forest of Vastmanland, Sweden. No one is sure why it was so important for many Sweden’s to change their names when they left the old country. Perhaps it was for them a symbol of their total severance from their past. They wanted as little as possible of Sweden to remain with them. So Brodine was made. They came from the village Bro. “Bro” is the Swedish word for bridge. The village of Bro is so named for an old nearby bridge. “ Din” in Swedish means “your.” “Brodine” is to say in Swedish “Your Bro” It may have been their way of connecting to the place of their birth.
