Memorial services were held Friday, Dec. 20 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Okanogan, Wash. Her final resting place will be in GAR Cemetery, Miller, South Dakota, beside her beloved husband. Frieda Hermine Kruse was born to Elmo and Louise (Finkeisen) Kruse in West Germany January 24, 1907, the youngest of seven children. At the age of 3-1/2, she came with her parents, two sisters and one brother to the United States, settling in Jerauld County, S.D. She then moved to Buffalo County, where she went to grade school. She attended high school in Gann Valley and Wessington Springs. She married Robert J. Irwin June 18, 1926, in Mitchell. To this union two sons were born. They farmed for three years and then purchased the Highway Store in South Hand County, which they operated for 13 years. They then purchased their Hand County ranch. While they lived at the ranch, Frieda worked for a short time in the Miller auditor's office, then four years with the IBM Department of the South Dakota Highway Department in Pierre. She was also a school board member. In 1987, they moved to Miller. In 1991, two years after her husband's death, she moved from Miller to Omak, Wash., to be near her son and family. She had been a resident for the past year at Hansen House in Omak. Frieda had a great passion for reading, and she wrote poetry. She loved to dance, play cards and visit with her many friends. She is survived her her son Stuart (Marian) Irwin; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Keen of Seattle, Wash.; two nieces, Eleanor Viereck of Gann Valley and Shirley Hansen of Seattle, Wash.; two nephews, Andrew Brothanek of Miller and Donald Kruse of Enumclaw, Wash.; and many grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, January 5, 1989; a son, Lawrence Robert, in infancy; a sister, Henrietta Brothanek, and three sisters in infancy; one brother, Siebeit Kruse; her parents; and a grandson-in-law, David Shafer.
