Mr. Helland died Tuesday, May 13, while cutting grass at the Lake Jessie historic marker. He was born at Binford September 25, 1899, and had attended business college in Fargo. He had served in World War II, and been employed as a meat cutter here since 1948. He married Florence Palm November 11, 1952. She died in 1964. "Fritz" Helland, 69, was held in Trinity Lutheran Church here Friday, Rev. E. J. Langness officiating. Mr. Helland died Tuesday, May 13, while cutting grass at the Lake Jessie historic marker. He was born at Binford September 25, 1899, and had attended business college in Fargo. He had served in World War II, and been employed as a meat cutter here since 1948. He married Florence Palm November 11, 1952. She died in 1964. At an early age he began collecting Indian artifacts, and had a large collection of arrowhead and other stone tools. Though this he became interested in the territorial history of this region, particularly the expeditions which traveled through here in the nineteenth century. He became interested in preserving, protecting and identifying the historic sites in the county, and was active in founding the Griggs County Historical Society. He was elected president of the group at its charter meeting in October, 1960, and had held the office ever since. He leaves six brothers, and two sisters; Hjalmer, Plains, Montana; Otto, McVille; Sig, Auburn, Washington; Rudolph, Jessie' Kermit, Binford; Walter, Wahpeton; Minnie, Everett, Washington; and Selma, Cooperstown.
