Born Aug. 7, 1899 near Castalia, he was the son of Wilhelm and Martha Heins Martens. Novenber 26, 1899 he was baptized in St. Paul's Lutheran church, Postville, by Pastor E. Bookelmann. His confirmation occurred in the same church, Apr. 5, 1914 with Pastor R. Kuehne officiating. After the death of his mother when he was 9, Martens made his home with relatives until August 1921 when he moved to Deep River and became a farm employee for a number of years. Dec. 18, 1924 he married Elda Behrens in St. John's Lutheran church with the Rev. Frederick Kreutz officiating. The couple farmed south of Victor until Oct. 26, 1969 when they moved to their present home in Victor. They joined St. James Lutheran church then. Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Burdette (Clara) Jack, Victor; Mrs. Alden (Dorothy) Nuehring, Postville; four grandchildren; a great granddaughter; a brother, Elmer Martens, Hoxie, KS., and a sister, Mrs. Barney Nelson, Oelwein.
