Betit, 87, of Academy Street and formerly of the old Belgrade Road, Augusta, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness. He was born in Mexico on Sept. 22, 1919, to Cyprien Betit and Elizabeth (Theriault) Betit. After graduating from Cony High School in 1938, Gabe joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served proudly in the CCC until joining the U.S. Army in 1941. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. Gabe received his bachelor's degree from Evansville University in 1956. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Interstate Fire Protection in Augusta. Gabe was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church where he was a former lector, and later was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallowell. He was a past Grand Knight of Abnaki Council 334 -- 3rd degree Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho Council Knights of Columbus, a member and past faithful navigator of Abnaki Assembly 346 -- 4th degree Knights of Columbus and served on the degree team statewide, a member of Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post 2, Disabled American Veterans and American Association of Retired Persons. Gabe also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels Program for more than 15 years. He was predeceased by his parents, a son Roland Betit; a grandson Thomas Dostie; three brothers: Adjutor Betit, Florien Betit and Joseph Betit; two sisters: Bernadette Pomerleau and Lucienne Cody. Survivors include his wife, Rose M. (Janssens) Betit, of Hallowell; two sons: Richard C. Betit and his wife, Debbie, of Warminster, Pa., and John G. Betit and his wife, Glenda, of Kintnersville, Pa.; three daughters: Beatrice Becknell and her husband, Jan, of Sellersville, Pa., Catherine Bryant and her husband, David, of Pittston, and Margaret Dostie and her husband, Michael, of Somerville; one brother, Lionel Betit, of Bingham; two sisters: Gertrude Virgin of Augusta and Julia Coulombe of Augusta; six grandchildren; and also three great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a cousin, Cecile Betit of Augusta. Following cremation, burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 12 Summer St., Hallowell, ME 04347.
