Gale was born on June 16, 1927, to Arthur and Rosa (Nuese) Wolken, at her family home in Dillon. She attended Dunbar schools and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1941. After graduating, Gale helped her young, widowed mother for 15 years, and after her mother died, she became a registered nanny. A natural caregiver, Gale helped raise many children and she deeply loved her nieces and nephews. Gale is survived by four nieces: Meredean Gifford, Annette Williams, Rosemary Coody, and Betty Wolken; two nephews, Warren and Mark Wolken; a sister-in-law, Sue Wolken-Winter; and many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Richard Wolken, Fern Thompson, Lyle Wolken, and Wesley Wolken, a niece, Sonja Koscielski, and a great niece, Joanne Koscielski.
