Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, with the Rev. Joel Gueningsman officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, rural Soldier. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com. Gale Vernon was born July 21, 1935, in Soldier, Iowa, the son of Vernon John and B. Maxine (Young) Grant. He grew up on a farm between Soldier and Ute. He attended country school and graduated from Soldier High School in 1953. Gale and Jenita Marie Nordaker were united in marriage on June 6, 1953, in Onawa, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Randy, Rhonda, Marcia, Mark and Leann. He was employed by Monona County as a surveyor for many years and retired from Low Implement in Onawa as parts manager. He enjoyed anything mechanical, woodworking, playing cribbage, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church. He was a volunteer with the Soldier Fire Department and also served on the Soldier City Council. Gale is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jenita Grant of Denison; five children, Randy Grant of Soldier, Rhonda (David) Johnson of Blytheville, Ark., Marcia (Matt) Jacobs of Omaha, Mark (Kathy) Grant of Arion, Iowa, and Leann (fiance, Steve Allen) Ohlmeier of Soldier; 11 grandchildren, Christopher (Susan) Johnson, Cortny (Nicole) Johnson, Robin (Chuck) Salfrank, Sarah Jacobs, Meagan (Derrick) Mills, Matthew Jacobs II, Jason Grant, Jennifer (fiance, Cory Call) Grant, Andrea Ohlmeier, Joshua (Sarah) Ohlmeier, and Desiree (fiance, Alyssa Snell) Ohlmeier; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jane (Stanley) Holt of Mapleton, Iowa, Karen (Gene) Soukup of Ute, Iowa, and Janette Kelly of Macedonia, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Grant of Le Mars, Iowa, and Wanda Grant of Hope, Ark.
