In a separate accident near Middletown, Va., a Hagerstown man was also killed. Gamma Lee Doyle, 38, Cavetown was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. E. W. Ditto III, county medical examiner. Dr. Ditto said Mrs. Doyle died instantly with a fractured skull. Rushed to the Washington County Hospital was Pauline Evelyn Hayes, 39, Cavetown. However, she died at 5:12 p.m., said Dr. Ditto. Her injuries consisted of crushed chest and internal injuries. Mrs. Doyle was a passenger in the Hayes car. TFC Elmer Baum said the car operated by Mrs. Hayes was traveling west on Route 64 one mile west of Cavetown. A second car driven by Gene Allen Swain, 17, Cavetown, was coming east. Baum said the Swain car skidded on the snowy highway, crossing the center of the road, and hit the Hayes car head-on. Both cars were a total loss. Swain was taken to the emergency room of the hospital and treated for a laceration of the leg and arm. TFC Baum said charges against Swain were pending a conference with the state's attorney. In a second accident, which occurred on U.S. 11 in Middletown, Va., early Thursday, Herbert Berlin Sams, 2377 Pennsylvania Ave., was killed. Sams, who died on his 34th birthday, was killed in a tractor-trailer crash. Police said Sams apparently went to sleep while headed north on Route 11. His vehicle rammed a tree head-on after swerving a power pole. A passenger in the rig, Kenneth Kenton See, 36, Hagerstown, escaped with what were apparently slight injuries. Mrs. Pauline F. Hayes, aged 39, was born in Myersville, the daughter of Walter E. and the late Margaret B. Myers Shank. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Smithsburg. Mrs. Hayes had been employed by the L'Aiglon Apparel Company for the past 12 years. She is survived by her husband, Harold W. Hayes and daughter, Linda Hayes, at home; sisters, Mrs. Helen Long, Mrs. Hazel Garnard, both of Hagerstown; Mrs. Dorothy Bishop and Mrs. D. Michael, both of Baltimore. Funeral services will be conducted at the Minnich Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Heffner officiating. Burial will be made in the Smithsburg Cemetery. Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home Saturday evening from 7 until 9. GAMME LEE DOYLE, aged 39, was the daughter of Geneva Leathers Doyle and the late Franklin Doyle. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Women's Bible Class. She had been employed by the L'Aiglon Apparel for the past 16 years. She had been a resident of Cavetown for the past 29 years. Surviving are son, John E. and daughter, Georgianna L., both at home; mother, Mrs. Geneva L. Doyle; sister, Mrs. Anna Giggs, Smithsburg; Mrs. Emily Sheetz, Cavetown; Mrs. Mary Snook, Williamsport; Mrs. Geneva Turner, Cavetown; brothers, Emory C. Doyle, Myersville; Franklin Doyle, Hagerstown. The body was removed to the Minnich Funeral Home, Smithsburg, and will be taken to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday conducted by the Rev. Harry Yeide, Jr. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery. The casket will not be opened and friends may call at the Doyle home in Cavetown.
